For the past 6 months or so I’ve been putting a lot of emphasis on bringing up my Delts, Bis and Tris. In order to maximize my training frequency for these muscle groups I started training all three together 3 times per week. Although I’m using much less overall volume per muscle group per training session the results have been significant!
When it comes to improving ourselves and building a better body inside and out its funny how we can often be met with resistance from those that we expected would be there to support our changes. The good news if you have found yourself in this situation is that you are certainly not alone. Having negative experiences with those around you about the healthier choices you are trying to make can easily derail you on the road to the physique and lifestyle you ultimately want to lead. This is why it is so important to make a conscious decision to surround yourself with those people who will only serve to uplift and support you during the difficult journey of true lifestyle change.
Retaining water can make you feel bloated and cause your hands, feet and ankles to swell. Water retention occurs for different reasons, including hormonal changes, the consumption of sodium, high blood pressure or other medical conditions. See your doctor if you experience frequent water retention to rule out an underlying disorder. If your water retention is hormonal or diet related, you may find relief in a few of these natural methods.
In any training phase, whether it is a phase of adding muscle or reducing body fat, the relationship between diet and training is key to success. Like any relationship, it will fail if both sides do not work synergistically, changes on one side must be made with consideration and respect to the other and vice versa...
Delts. Boulders. Cannonballs. Caps. Regardless of what you call them, everyone wants nice shoulders, right? Having a great pair of shoulders is vitally important if you’re a competitor because so much of what the judges are looking for has to do with your shoulder to waist ratio.
In the following paragraphs and the accompanying video link, I want to briefly talk about the muscles that make up the shoulder, highlight my approach for training shoulders and demonstrate a series of exercises that will get your caps to pop.
Testosterone is responsible not only for optimal muscle mass, it is also vital for sexual drive and function. For those of you who compete, chances are that you are already consuming several of the foods, minerals and herbs which are known to enhance testosterone production, but let’s review them here. If you are having issues with a lagging libido, you might want to add a couple of substances that are not yet in your regimen...
It's a sunny and crisp day in early June and I'm on a train headed to NYC for a long overdue meeting with Mike Lyons of Silver Model Management. Last year after competing in the IFBB North American Championships, which was my second time competing at a national level show, Mike had asked me to come down to meet with him and the Silver Team. I had submitted some photographs through Silver's website and was fortunate enough to catch the Creative Director's attention. Unfortunately for me the timing was bad....my Wife was due at any time with our first child, Sophia, and I simply had too many responsibilities that needed my attention.
Fast forward 7 months to May 5th, 2013...
I would first like to thank everyone who wrote me to let me know they enjoyed Part I. Without you guys I would not have the opportunity to write these articles. Thank you again and please keep the comments, thoughts, and questions coming. So here are some more bodybuilding myths:
• The only way to get shredded is fish and veggies: While tilapia and broccoli are excellent foods to eat anytime, the tilapia and broccoli diet to get lean is not necessary and honestly is just unhealthy. Your body won’t receive enough nutrition or calories. Your body is bound to go into starvation mode and a catabolic state. Weeks of this type of diet and large amounts of cardio will burn muscle mass quicker than you can imagine!

Motivation is a psychological feature that encourages an individual to act towards a desired goal. It could be the simple fact of seeing someone else lifting or squatting more than you which could motivate you, or maybe it’s because you are trying to impress the cute girl on the treadmill. Whatever it may be, there are motivational elements all around us.
Motivation is a very important factor in elite level sports for the simple reason it’s what makes you do what you do. If you’re not motivated to be the absolute best you can be, then you will definitely fall far short of that which you are capable.
There are two particular types of motivation, Intrinsic and Extrinsic.

So, if you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight. It’s simple isn’t it? You’ve worked out through a complex formula, a simple multiplication or perhaps even trial and error that you need to consume ‘x’ amount of calories to maintain your weight. These calories will come from protein and carbohydrates, each providing 4 calories per gram, and fats providing 9 calories per gram. So irrespective of the balance of these macronutrients, as long as the total number of calories consumed hits your maintenance level, you will maintain your weight. If it is below your maintenance level you will lose weight and if it is above it you will gain weight. Right? Well not exactly…

With us today is MP Competitor Bryan Waring. Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
Well I knew I never wanted to be a bodybuilder, so I immediately took interest judging off the criteria it presented. The model, Beach body, fitness look I knew was just for me. The introduction of the board shorts was also of major interest to me, I couldn’t see myself stepping on stage in those little trunks bodybuilders wear.
I love to train. Intense, hardcore, high rep, heavy weight sets, conducted over short training sessions. This is what gets me fired up. It is my passion and my desire to better myself each day.
The reason I am telling you this, is that every day when I walk into the gym, I have one goal in mind. To work harder, to grow and to achieve more than I did the previous session. Knowing I have given it my all, pushed through my mental limits and have added more value to my business today, I continue on to improve my physique and have bettered the overall top line for my business.
What a monster show the JR USA's turned out being for the Men's Physique Division. There were over 130 MP Competitors on stage at the JR's today! Three of these 130+ competitors earned their IFBB Pro Cards on this highly competitive stage.
This was the first Pro Qualifier here in The States for 2013 and is an incredible sign of what can be expected for the calander year in this ever growing division.

On April 27th, Winnipeg, Manitoba played host to the CBBF Natural Nationals. Many competitors were worried about heading to Winnipeg, as this has been a very harsh winter, with temperatures remaining well below freezing. It was as if the clouds and temperatures broke through, just to make sure this weekend’s event was enjoyed by all those attending. Temperatures warmed up to the highest temperatures the city has seen since this past October.
Congrats on a great showing and getting back on stage! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
After having three open heart surgeries, I knew I couldn’t carry the size I did as a bodybuilder, so men’s physique seemed like a perfect fit. My interest increased when I learned that the two top competitors in each height class receive pro cards at the Master’s National. At age 41, this was great news.
