Whether you are training hard as a bodybuilder or physique competitor, our sport is largely an individual sport where one is often left to figure it all out on their own and, compared to other pursuits, a greater number of things can, and will go wrong along the path to success.
For example, the pre-competition phase demands a number of critical steps to be followed before one steps onstage: diet, training, supplementation, posing and mindset all need to be worked on and perfected before competitive success can be realized...
"What are the ideal reps and sets for muscle growth?" The question has been around as long as bodybuilding. You may be thinking that you know exactly the right reps and sets for muscle growth. Three sets per each exercise and 6-12 reps, right? It's what the average bodybuilder has been doing since bodybuilding began. Unfortunately, the answer is not that simple...
Are you looking to slash some major fat or just wrap up a couple finishing touches? Either way, one or all of these three tips may contain the answer for which you have been looking.
1. REDUCE CALORIE CONSUMPTION. Unless you restrict calorie intake, you won't lose belly fat...
You must be living under a rock somewhere if you have yet to jump on the social media bandwagon. Thankfully, the majority of you are already relatively active within the world of social media. Perhaps you have slacked off on certain platforms due to a lack of time or boredom, but bear in mind that electronic media avenues provide an easy means by which you can reach a huge target audience, especially if a post goes viral...
I honestly can’t remember the last time I did cardio on a machine. “Not that there’s anything wrong with that,” to use a Seinfeld reference, but I prefer to work with more athletic modalities. One of my favorite pieces of conditioning equipment is the often overlooked, humble, inexpensive, and extremely portable jump rope. Jumping rope really provides a tremendous fitness ‘bang for your buck!’ It not only gives you a serious caloric burn, but it really enhances one’s coordination and athleticism!
Getting Started...
It happens to all of us, no matter who we are; the feeling as if we are going through the motions. Those times when we’re not quite sure why we are doing what we are doing, and instead of acknowledging just how far we have come, we dwell on how far we have to go. During these times one of the most important things we can do is to find our Why!
Our Why is one of the most important things that we all have. It is the deep-seeded reason for what we do in our lives and what keeps us going when things get tough! However if we do not have a strong enough Why, we will lack the motivation to keep us moving forward. Our Why must be something that we are highly attached to and willing to protect at all costs!
When you think back to the first few months you ever spent in the weight room, you probably remember adding more and more muscle with seemingly every session. What’s more, this was despite not having half the knowledge that you may have now with respect to training or nutrition. But still, in that first year of training your weight shot up by 15 pounds and you also looked significantly leaner!..
With us today is Tony Torres. Congrats on earning your pro card Tony. What made you compete in the Men's Physique Division?
Last year I did a national qualifier bodybuilding show called The Diana Cadeau Classic and I won my class, overall and best poser. Then I thought to myself, wow, if I go to the nationals at 170lbs at my height in bodybuilding I'm going to get crushed. So I said to myself, not a bad way to end my bodybuilding competition days – Physique here I come!
Tell us about a little about the show you just recently competed in.
Yes, I competed in the IFBB North American Championships. Over 850 competitors. That’s where I nabbed my IFBB Pro card, Short Class A...
Results. That’s the name of the game, right? If you talk with any competitor about what they hope to accomplish for the next show or season, they will inevitably use a variety of words to describe what is essentially an outcome or result. Typically, these descriptions include the following keywords: bigger, shredded, wider, tighter, leaner, and stronger.
Interestingly enough, these same keywords show up in marketing and advertising campaigns for supplements. Why? Because people want results, and they want to understand the potential outcome or benefit that can be derived from using said product or service. It’s just human nature...
Ask someone, anyone, to "flex" or "make a muscle" and what do they do? Bust out the old tried-and-true Schwarzenegger twisting front biceps pose. It's every teenage boys dream to build huge biceps complete with a sharp peak to attract all the ladies – or at least to stop the bully from those Charles Atlas comic book ads from kicking sand in your face at the beach.
Unfortunately, biceps are one of the most over-trained muscle groups known to man. Ask any "brofessor" at the gym… Mondays are chest, Tuesdays are biceps, and Wednesdays? Why, chest and biceps, of course! I think most average lifters need only one day committed to arms each week, or slight biceps work after major back exercises on a "pull" day. But who wants to be average? If you're reading this, you want some biceps peak. And you want it now! No full Larry Scott arms for you. You’re interested in some Arnold-like 22-inch mountain peaks!
The man in the shorts today is Matthew Wold – Family man, financial advisor, Marine and self professed band geek. Matthew, congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
I had tried a few bodybuilding shows in the past, but was relatively unsuccessful due to my genetics. I have a naturally lean and athletic build and that seemed to transfer well to the Men’s Physique Division. I love competing and wanted to continue to get on stage. After researching a lot on this fairly new division, I really felt that I could compete and succeed in it...

With us today is Ugo Arimo. Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
I've always been told I had a great physique so I decided to try my hand at it.
Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?
I competed at the Europa Supershow in Dallas, Texas. I competed in the Open class and the Masters division 35 and up.
How did you feel after pre-judging?
After Pre-judging I felt tired and hungry. Lol...

This weekend is a monster of a weekend in the NPC and IFBB Men's Physique world. Two major contests are on tap. We have the second to last chance to go pro this year in Pittsburg at the NPC North American Championships. This is another one of Gary Udit's shows. Time and time again his contests run along smoothly like a well-oiled machine in classic venues. You can be sure that by then end of the weekend we will have another top notch class of MP Pro's joining the ranks of the already stacked division.
Additionally this weekend is of course the Valenti Gold Cup in Florida put on by Patricia Valenti. This is a vital show for all IFBB MP Pro's looking to step on stage at the Olympia. This is that last opportunity of the year for Olympia hopefuls to earn their spot by taking the show or collecting points by placing top five.
By the end of this weekend we will have a slew of new pros and know exactly who we can expect to see on the big Olympia stage in the first ever Olympia Men's Physique Showdown!
For all of the latest play by play on the Valenti Gold Cup follow along and get involved on the live feed at: http://forums.rxmuscle.com/showthread.php?121647-2013-IFBB-Valenti-Gold-Cup-Competitors-Lists-Photos-Videos-Play-by-Play-amp-Results!
Meet MP Competitor Duane Brickhouse. Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
Thank you very much. I have followed bodybuilding for years and I started attending the Olympia in 2010, which is really what made me want to be a part of the bodybuilding world. I was very excited when the Physique Division was created, because I felt like it was a perfect fit for me. With some encouragement from my wife, I decided to take the leap and give it a try. It is very exciting to be around like-minded people that are consistently focused on improving themselves. It really is a great community of individuals.
Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?
My most recent competition was the Master’s Nationals in Pittsburgh. It was a well-run show with a large amount of competitors. And as usual, I met a lot of great competitors...
One of the biggest criticisms I hear about Men's Physique competitors is that they have no legs. They are simply average gym-goers absent of leg development who wake up one day and decide to donn some Hurley board shorts. I beg to differ. My leg training requires a 24-hour commitment. Some weeks I literally cannot sleep before "leg day" because I am so excited.
One cannot have an aesthetically pleasing (and contest-winning) body with "chicken-legs." I'm going to walk you through an intermediate leg workout for those competitors looking for award-winning wheels...
With us today is Jon Lazo to discuss his life-changing win! Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
What made me decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division was my passion for fitness. Growing up I’ve always been an athlete. Primarily a high school wrestler! Therefore, as a person, I live off of competition! After completing high school, I attended a community college and with all the spare time I had, I decided to join a gym! Shortly after, I fell in love with weight training and fitness. In addition, after three years of training and being asked if I competed, I decided give it a shot!
Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?
As a Men’s Physique competitor, I recently made my debut at Jason Arntz’s NPC Muscle Beach Championships at Monmouth University, August 10th. I placed 1st in Men’s Physique Class C which included 14 competitors...
I would like to clarify something that I have noticed since entering the Men’s Physique division, first at the National level and which is even more relevant at the IFBB Pro level. Whether we all agree or not; the fact is that in the Men’s Physique division posing has become known as the key point to placing in the top. Everyone knows that just because you have the sickest, most ripped physique, if you can't present it, then you're not delivering the overall best package and your placing will reflect that...
Jay Hall, “It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of WHEN!”
Congrats on a great showing Jay! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
It was late in 2011 when a buddy of mine named Micah Buck was telling me he was getting ready to compete in this thing called Men’s Physique. I had never even heard of it so I went home and started researching and then boom, I had a goal to lose weight since I had put onthe pounds back then.
Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?
I just did Team Universe in New Jersey which was my first national level show. It was a pro qualifier and Top 2 in Men’s Physique would become IFBB Pros...
