Meet the Man in The Shorts: Matthew Wold

TheIMG 0462 man in the shorts today is Matthew Wold – Family man, financial advisor, Marine and self professed band geek.  Matthew, congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

I had tried a few bodybuilding shows in the past, but was relatively unsuccessful due to my genetics.  I have a naturally lean and athletic build and that seemed to transfer well to the Men’s Physique Division.  I love competing and wanted to continue to get on stage.  After researching a lot on this fairly new division, I really felt that I could compete and succeed in it.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?

I recently did the NPC Northern Indiana in South Bend and won the tall class and overall.  It was a great experience and a very organized show.  I had a great time and met a lot of great people doing it.  Being my first time on stage in the Men’s Physique Division, I learned a lot about the sport and what I need to do to prepare for the stage.

How did you feel after pre-judging?

I was a bit pessimistic and nervous after pre-judging.  There was some great competition in the Men’s Physique Division and I was unsure of myself.  My wife had taken a few pictures and I was comparing myself to the rest of the athletes.  I felt that I had placed at least top 3, but was only praying for the win.  Enduring the 4-hour span between the pre-judging and finals was very nerve racking but I was anxious and looking forward to getting back up there to hear the judge’s decision.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?

I was, and still am, very happy and excited.  It was a great feeling to win my first show in the Men’s Physique Division.  I felt I brought a good physique, but learned that I could have done a few things different to bring a better package.  I was elated to win the overall and qualify for Nationals.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?

I think Men’s Physique Division is great.  It gives the guys with a different body type an arena to display all of their hard work and dedication to the sport.  As far as my career, I am hoping to get a pro card down the road which will hopefully open a lot of doors for my future.

What peaked your interest in training?

I was always a skinny kid.  I graduated high school at 6’2” and 132 pounds.  I joined the Marine Corps and started gaining a little weight with eating a lot and training a bit, but never anything serious.  I ended up friending a bodybuilder at a job that I had and he taught me about lifting seriously.  The rest is history.

Who influences/influenced your training?

My wife and three kids are a huge influence.  They push me to be all that I can, and I want to show my kids what hard work and dedication can do in your life.

Sports: Basketball, Football, Golf

Special interests: I love Jeopardy and want to be on the show one day!  I love spending time with my family as much as I can. I coach all of my kid’s sports teams and have them work out with me as much as they can.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?

I have a strong work ethic and when I put my mind to something, I finish it.  I am also a highly competitive person, so if I am going to get on a stage, I want to be at my best to place as high as possible.  My wife is the biggest supporter of mine.  She helps keep me on track if I tend to waiver, especially during the diet.  Occasionally my kids ask, “Is that on your diet, DAD?”

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:

I was a scrawny BAND GEEK in high school!!  I was the first chair trumpet player and an academic nerd, which did not equate to being much of a ladies man!  Thank God my wife liked shy nerds!!
