One of the largest Highland Games in the country is the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Arlington, TX the weekend of May 4, 5, 6. With more than 50,000 people expected to attend it certainly will have its share of highlights. SallyAnne and I will bring you all of the Festival highlights including Bagpipers, Food tasting (yes, Sally has agreed to eat Haggis), beer and whiskey tasting, Highland Dancers, and much more.
It’s been 8 years since I competed in any sporting event. I have competed in Strongman, Powerlifting, Strength Demonstrations but none of them have been as much fun as competing at a Highland Games event. When I was living in the Northwest, there was summer long circuit from Vancouver, BC to Eugene, Oregon that I have the fondest memories of. Sleeping in tents on the fairgrounds at the massive Scottish Festivals, the amount of Scottish Ale and Single Malt whiskey we consumed, as I look back at it now, frightened my liver!
The strongmen are back for one day only at the Olde Time Coney Island Strongman Spectacular on May 20th at 2:30 p.m.
A display of such magnitude has not been seen on the streets of Coney Island for over 60 years. In an effort to bring back the grandiose family friendly spectacles that Coney Island was once known for, Coney Island USA and Adam RealMan, in association with Chris Rider, have collaborated on what can only be described as a colossal event. They have gathered some of the strongest men in the country for a showcase of unusual acts and super human feats the likes of which your eyes have never seen. Not since Coney Island’s golden years have giants such as these performed at the legendary amusement mecca in a free, all-ages event staged right on the street. Each of these performers has several unique feats that they have mastered, as well as the classic strongman standards that no strongman cavalcade should be without.
This article is one in a great series that the strength sports guys over at Elite FTS have produced over the years. Science is the most important element to discovering new concepts and creating applicable training to those principals. Thanks to Elite FTS and Martyn Girvan for this article. Hopefully you can gleen information from this to make you the next Benedikt Magnusson or Richard Hawthorne!
Many of the athletes reading this right now that have ever participated in a powerlifting meet have probably had either their picture or their name printed from a meet they competed in, in Powerlifting USA. Mike Lambert has been in the business for 35 long years supporting the sport he was so passionate about. Below, Mike outlines the demise of one of the greatest strength journals of all time.
On July 14, 2012 the Odd Haugen Strength Challenge will be at the San Jose Fit Expo in San Jose, California. This event is OPEN to all qualified NAS member athletes. The top three athletes in each weight class will qualify for the 2012 NAS National Championship and the Open Champion will get a direct invite (entry fee waived) to the 2013 All American Strongman Challenge including travel reimbursements (flight or milage) and hotel accommodations for two nights.
In Strength Athletics, there are certainly a lot of "Unique" records out there. Sometimes, they are obscure enough that people have forgotten about them for a time and when it pops up, someone gets the brilliant idea they should give it a go. Legendary UK Strongman "Daddy Glenn Ross and Ed "Spartan" Hall settled on a tie for a new world record in the brick lift with 25 each.
Giants Live: Melbourne!
Giants Live is the official world wide arena based qualifying tour for the World’s Strongest Man. To kick off the 2012 season, Giants Live is in Melbourne, Australia as part of the FitX Expo this weekend March 17 & 18.
With less then 72 hours until the kick-off of the 2012 American Strongman season the
folks at ASC seemingly never sleep as they announced today the site of the 2012
Americaʼs Strongest Man®. “We are very proud to announce that the location for ASM
2012 is New York City,” said ASC President Dione Wessels, “This our biggest event of
the year, and the timing and location will guarantee that this will be the best strongman
show of the year!”
Last year we saw what could be the beginning of a trend in cross-over athletes in the strength game. Specifically, those who were competitive in one sport, but crossed over to strongman usually via an injury in the original sport. American Brian Shaw won the 2011 Worlds Strongest Man event in North Carolina. Shaw, a former collegiate basketball player stands 6’ 8” tall. He also breaks the long lanky basketball stereotype by weighing in regularly over 420lbs. Well, he now has company. The massive Shaw can now look someone dead in the eye when he is competing. Iceland's Haptor “Thor” Bjornsson stands 6’ 9” and topped the scale at the Worlds Strongest Man at 430lbs last fall. The affable 23 year old bank security guard will be competing alongside nine other invitees at the 2012 Arnold Strongman Classic.
Here is a brief look at the American Athletes selected for the 11th annual Arnold Strongman Classic. Half of this star studded field of ten are Americans. That in itself is not unusual, but it will be the first time two American ASC winners will battle. It is also the first time there have been three champions; Poundstone, Savikas and defending champion Brian Shaw will go head to head. Here are the 10 athletes squaring off for the coveted title as the biggest, the baddest and the strongest strength athlete on the planet.
I receive dozens of health related questions in my PM or email box every week from athletes from nearly every sector of sports (except badminton. huh...) asking for guidance with Peptides, AAS and mostly, health issues. Most want help deciphering their blood work results or want more information about a disease process that affects them that they didn’t quite understand at their doctors office. And somehow, lots of STD questions too. Lots of naughty people out there... I really enjoy getting information out to these men and women who might otherwise be misinformed by gym rats and places like bodybuilding.com who only “heard about a friend” who had the same issue.
Sean Katterle, promoter for Hardcore Powerlifting is reporting on his Ironman Blog that Benedikt Magnussen has torn a bicep during his prep for the Arnold Strongman Classic. Benedikt was to compete at the Arnold and then return to Dallas, Tx to compete in the Hardcore Powerlifting event at the Ronnie Coleman where last year he set the All-time heaviest dedlift ever pulled in competition at 1,015lbs.
From March 2nd - March 4th the strongest athletes in the country will be competing to be named the 2012 National Weightlifting Champion. ABU DHABI // Kevin Nee is the type of chap who likes to keep a close check on his daily intake of calories - up to 10,000 of them.
Kevin also likes to pull fire engines, but he has his reasons. He wants one day to be recognised as the world's strongest man.
In Abu Dhabi yesterday at least he made the top nine, in the WSF World Strongman Championship.

This couldn't express with any greater clarity how I view the cult like fanatacism called CrossFit. This article originally appeared in Mens Health Magazine and was reposted in Yahoo Health. Thanks and credit to Grant Stoddard.
"CrossFit is going to transform your body. It's going to transform your life in ways you can't imagine."
This wasn't a late-night infomercial. It was the ardent opinion of my former girlfriend. I had mentioned that I was thinking of trying CrossFit, and Becky, to my surprise, told me she was already a year into it, and that it had given her a "new lease on life" and a "whole new family." On every other subject she sounded like the same levelheaded girl I used to live with. But when she talked about CrossFit, she sounded like a lunatic.
