Beware of Predators behind the LENS

Fitness models beware of the random guys with cameras. creep Men’s Physique is going to breed a whole new crop of young unaware talent for these creeps to prey on.  I don’t think they will be devoured but certainly will be much easier to be taken advantage of as the new guys look to get noticed and are all too trusting.

They will approach you at a show and say, “Can I snap some photos of you.”  So you think to your self: more exposure and pictures, right onWHAT!!! You didn’t even ask their credentials.  Check out this guys business card.  If the guy doesn’t have one, don’t let him shoot you.  If it looks like he purchased a bulk pack of business cards at staples and did his printing on the computer. Don’t let him shoot you!  A business card should be a reflection of who he is and what he represents with his creative lens.  Now the scenario gets worse. He already has some candid’s of you at the show and now he says “let’s go out back of the show and snap some real photos for you.” (That just sounds weird, kind of like hey little kid want some candy) So the naive competitor thinks to himself: great I can compete at a show and get my own photoshoot for free. Most photographers who do this for a living are going to charge you one way or the other. If they do not you should question their motives, because most have an agenda.  After you sign a model release they can submit your photos to websites who may pay them for their pictures of you.  They can also set up their own website and charge fees for people to view picture of you.

So let us recap. You registered to compete at a show $60 bucks. You just let some random guy take pictures of you, but you get a fee portfolio out of it.  Now your is mug posted on a website that you are to embarrassed to tell anyone about and you didn't get paid.  Priceless!

You should always discuss what the pictures are going to be used for before you let someone shoot you and get it in writing.  There are a few diamonds in the ruff that may give you some TFP/TFC  (time for picture or time for CD) and actually be really good.  They can may be just wanting to build their port as you grow yours.  However most of the time you will not find these guys at the fitness shows offering to snap photos for free.  Try googling your name and see what’s out their, you may be surprised.

If you want a real photo shoot with legit photographers then you should ask the promoters ahead of time who will be shooting that day. Do your research, there should be a list of the guys that have made it their career and actually submit images to reputable magazine to get picked up rather than just sit in their “creep folders with the rest of the unassuming fitness models.  Don't be afraid to ask for referrals or names of other models they have shot at the show so you can do your homework.  CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED!
