Is a sponsorship really a benefit for you? It seems like every time you turn around the corner someone is begging to be sponsored. The idea sounds great, free supplements, trips to all the expos, cash money, and fame. Is it really that way though? Many sponsored athletes have to work their ass off, stay conditioned year round, and give up weekends and other free time while working a full time job. Many times these athletes are working for free supplements at best and get very little publicity. I know what you’re thinking….free supplements are awesome. Sure free supplements are awesome, but the time invested in the working for the company supplying the free supplements is taking away from your free time. What if you had to work 6 weekends a year and promote a company daily to get $500 a month in supplements. So you’re getting $6000 in supplements. That’s a lot, but half the stuff you probably don’t want to take or don’t need. Now what if you took the 6 weekends, travel time, and your daily commitment and invested that time in building your own business. What would that do for your business, your own finances?
I’m not saying that no one should be a sponsored athlete. There are the lucky few that do get paid a good amount to be a sponsored athlete and good for them because they deserve it. There are also others that will benefit greatly from a sponsorship. What I’m saying is think about what your goals and business plan before just taking any sponsorship. How will this impact your business, your life, and your future? Are there better opportunities that you will be passing up? Do you even believe in the supplements? Life is full of opportunities and choices. Make sure you don’t pass up an opportunity, but make sure you make wise choices!
