How To Book Paid Gigs as a Fitness Model

There is no greater rush than getting on jamin thompsonstage in top form and showing off all of your hard work to the roar and applause of the audience. But let’s face it, at the end of the day every competitor wants to book paid gigs. That’s what it’s all about!

In this post I’m going to show you a few simple tricks to help you get noticed, sign with a reputable agency, and start booking paid gigs as a fitness model. I am also going to try to dispel several myths about paid fitness modeling work which I find to be very prevalent these days.

There is a TON of competition out there these days…with tons of aspiring fitness models all battling to pull off the so-called holy grail of fitness modeling which is gracing the cover of a top fitness magazine…or as a consolation prize…getting published in a magazine...

How Fitness Models Should Pose for Photo Shoots

[email protected]MF17-COVER

As a fitness model it is very important to know your body, best poses, different looks and what basically works and doesn’t work well for you.  This may seem obvious or simple on the surface, but if you’re a novice or even somewhat experienced, it’s different when the rubber meets the road during an actual shoot.  You don’t want to “freeze” when you are on an assignment or even a test for that matter.

What I recommend is first practice posing in front of a mirror.  When you think you have found certain poses that are flattering for your physique, then learn what that feels like.  Practice the achieving that pose so you can do so without the mirror, basically muscle & mind memory connections.  It is just as important to know what angles don’t work.

How Reachable Are You?

Recently I started the process of seeking outIMG 4763tagged of a landscape architecture company to design my new backyard. I put messages out to three different companies requesting information and bids for the job on a Monday. Within just two days, three out of the four companies responded with their details, qualifications, and estimates. Still waiting on the fourth company. So, pop quiz; which company is not going to get this job?

Now allow me to reframe this into the modeling world. A company (let’s say a magazine) needs to get a job done and they reach out to service providers to get this done (photographers, makeup artists, stylists and modeling talent). The magazine is on a routine deadline and really wants to hire you to be their cover model. So they send you an e-mail, but after a day or two, they don’t hear back. So the editor then sends a follow up e-mail (if you’re lucky). Maybe they give you a call or shoot you a quick text (if you are really lucky). Perhaps they even then shoot you a follow up message on Facebook (if you are really extremely lucky). And after all that, they still don’t hear back. Pop quiz again; which model is not going to get the job?..

Beware of Predators behind the LENS

Fitness models beware of the random guys with cameras. creep Men’s Physique is going to breed a whole new crop of young unaware talent for these creeps to prey on.  I don’t think they will be devoured but certainly will be much easier to be taken advantage of as the new guys look to get noticed and are all too trusting.

They will approach you at a show and say, “Can I snap some photos of you.”  So you think to your self: more exposure and pictures, right onWHAT!!! You didn’t even ask their credentials.  Check out this guys business card.  If the guy doesn’t have one, don’t let him shoot you.  If it looks like he purchased a bulk pack of business cards at staples and did his printing on the computer. Don’t let him shoot you!  A business card should be a reflection of who he is and what he represents with his creative lens.  Now the scenario gets worse. He already has some candid’s of you at the show and now he says “let’s go out back of the show and snap some real photos for you.” (That just sounds weird, kind of like hey little kid want some candy)

Do I really want to be sponsored?

Is a sponsorship really a benefit for you? It seems like every time you turn around the corner someone is begging to be sponsored. The idea sounds great, free supplements, trips to all the expos, cash money, and fame. Is it really that way though? Many sponsored athletes have to work their ass off, stay conditioned year round, and give up weekends and other free time while working a full time job.  Many times these athletes are working for free supplements at best and get very little publicity. I know what you’re thinking….free supplements are awesome. Sure free supplements are awesome, but the time invested in the working for the company supplying the free supplements is taking away from your free time. What if you had to work 6 weekends a year and promote a company daily to get $500 a month in supplements. So you’re getting $6000 in supplements. That’s a lot, but half the stuff you probably don’t want to take or don’t need. Now what if you took the 6 weekends, travel time, and your daily commitment and invested that time in building your own business.  What would that do for your business, your own finances?

How Fitness Models Should Tan for Photo Shoots

[email protected]BB-JulyCover

As a fitness model it is very important to fully prepare for a photo shoot.  Proper preparation is just as important as all the exercise and diet steps you did to get in photo shape.  Remember the photos will live forever and represent you.  So you want them to be the best possible in every way.

A good EVEN tan is a key part of having great photos.  There is nothing more frustrating for a photographer or client than to have a great model with a bad tan.  For the purpose of photography a tan should not be as dark as a stage tan for competition.  That is a stronger different type of lighting source.  The comment that always make me nervous is when a model says “don’t worry I tan even naturally”.  Unless you are like a chicken on a rotisserie it’s pretty tough to end up with a truly even tan.

Therefore the best two solutions are...

What’s The Angle?

There are so many times when we have a IMG_1065 (1)great model shoot planned but maybe not a great location.Short notice, no notice, but make them look great. Well, there are a few things we can do as models and photographers that can give us great results even when the location is less than perfect.

When my old trainer needed some promotional photos for his website, I was happy to get things moving, however, we had no time and a very small space to give a “hardcore gym”, look. We actually found a piece of corrugated plastic roofing lying behind the house and just propped it up for a makeshift studio. Now the dimensions of my background material were 8 feet by only 4 feet, so I had very little area to shoot at so we had to get creative...

How to negotiate with the photographer to agree on photo shoot terms

I’ll be the first to admit it, photographers are a IMG_4763taggedstrange breed. It is completely understandable why fitness models might find it frustrating to communicate with us. Many photographers only use the right side (the artistic and creative side) of their brain and often keep the left side (the well structured and organized side) turned off. The result is you may not get the photos you need, which is problematic particularly when you are paying for something you cannot use.

So, how do you (as a fitness talent and model) get what you need from us quirky photographers?

I think there are a few very simple steps which you can do upfront to ensure that you get the most out of each photo shoot.
