Meet MP Competitor Johnny Johnson

Joining 564923 10150831274025149 651500148 11909815 619467751 nus today is Johnny Johnson.  Congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
Thank you, my first show I’ve ever competed in was bodybuilding at NPC Contra Costa 2011 placing 5th in novice middleweights.  I’m a drug free athlete, and although it was my only first show, I immediately knew It was going to be tough to compete in this sport.  Men’s physique was then announced, and I felt it catered to all athletes, especially drug free competitors.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you just competed?
I competed in NPC Grand Prix 2012 in men’s physique. The event brought national level competition, with more than 30+ athletes.  Every athlete brought an incredible physique, and their own unique personalities.

How did you feel after pre-judging?
I knew I didn’t place, but something greater came over me.  I no longer was worried about placing, but the bigger picture.  I questioned why I compete, but most importantly knew that it’s just a game/test.  The real challenge is making it a lifestyle.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?
The athletes all brought their own special physiques; it’s up to the judges on what they want.  As a competitor, I’ll take their feedback and make adjustments accordingly.  I’ll bring the best physique I’m capable of sculpting next time.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?

Men’s physique is a platform for every one of all ages.  The physique division demands a lean, healthy, functional, and strong body.  With that in mind one can carry that body 365 days a year for the rest of their life.  As with all sports drugs are an issue of concern, but it’s not needed in this division.  Maybe that’s why it’s drawn so many competitors.  Every division (bodybuilding, fitness, physique, etc) demands unique talents and gifts.  As far as my career, it keeps me in shape for my military duty, and provides me with experience to have credibility for my future personal training aspirations.

Age: 26IMG 1951

Hometown: Los Angeles

Current city: Rocklin

Years training:  9 (Sophomore year in High school)
I’ve always been involved with sports, but strict meal plans and smart training started in 2011.

Education:  Bachelors in Sociology Sacramento State University

Occupation: United States Coast Guard, The Vitamin Shoppe, and Student.

Favorite type of training:
My trainer and sponsor IFBB Pro Trish Wood at Iron Addiction creates my workout plan.  We keep it real basic with a lot of attention to mind/muscle connection and super-setting.

Favorite body part to train:
Legs!  Although board shorts cover them I still love the feeling of having strong powerful lower body.  The body must be in balance, and having a strong lower body will only compliment the upper body in achieving a greater physique.

Favorite exercise:
The classic squat.  It’s a love hate relationship.  It demands so much energy and focus.  After your last set of squats you could go home feeling like you lifted the world off your shoulders.

Rep range:
12+ (Heavy as possible) I’m not looking for size; I’m looking to stay lean with nice symmetry.

Number of sets:
3-4 Per exercise

Typical workout duration:
50-60 Min/ Weights
20-30 Minutes/Cardio High Intensity Interval Training

Training split:
One part per day 5/days a week

Typical daily eating plan:
6-8 Meals.  I mainly eat eggs, poultry, lean meats, and fish.  Carbohydrates come from vegetables throughout the day (green beans, broccoli, mushrooms etc), and oatmeal in morning.

Favorite supplement:
I incorporate more real food into my diet; I’ll do half egg white/water using Lana’s egg whites and my favorite protein powder after my workout to replenish my body quickly.

What peaked your interest in training?
After my deployment to the Middle East with my Coast Guard unit, I was struggling to adapt back to civilian life. I called one of my buddies, to check up on him and asked him what he was up to since we’ve been back.  He told me he was training for a marathon; I then knew I wanted to challenge myself and compete in my first bodybuilding show.

Who influences/influenced your training?Screen shot 2012-02-02 at 8.26.14 PM 2
My trainers IFBB Pro Trish Wood (training), and her husband Mike Wood (nutrition).  And most importantly my grandpa Tony who showed me his physique picture of him in his teens in Hawaii, he looked like Bruce Lee!

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?
Having the support from family, friends, and the people I wish to inspire keeps me on track to living healthy and responsibly. My Iron Addiction team full of moms, and 1 other male keep me moving at 5:20 AM! I have the desire to do my full 20 years in the military and join law enforcement.  Those jobs demand a healthy functional body!

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
I struggle with my workouts, dieting, and motivation.  Finding balance is key to a happy healthy life.  I try to do whatever makes me happy at that given moment.  The beauty of truly finding yourself allows the possibility to allow others to be part of your world as well.
