Interview with NPC California State Championship's MP Overall Winner David Kimmerle

Ian: We David-Kimmerle-fatare here with David Kimmerle, winner of the 2012 NPC Cal Championships. Thanks for joining us David.

David: Thanks for having me.

I: How did you feel going into the competition and what were you expecting?

D: I felt pretty good about my prep for the NPC CAL, I held myself accountable with all my tricks. My diet had me a little nervous as I was trying a new way of dialing in but I think it worked.  I also watched a ton of video of other competitions and felt like if my stage presence was good enough, I would not get lost in the sea of blue shorts and six packs. So I practiced and I practiced, watching the video I also learned that my body was a little thick for the competition so I cut down to 195 from a pretty lean 208. My expectations were amazing competition and I expected intimidating physiques everywhere, I was right. I also expected Jon Lindsay to live up to his reputation of throwing a great show, I was not disappointed. I did not anticipate a win though, after watching all the video I realized it would be up to my peers as much as me.  All I knew going in was that I had done the best job I could do to put the best David in front of them possible. I am very fortunate to be picked out of these amazing athletes.

I: What changes, if any, did you make in your training and diet up to the show?

D: My diet was the biggest change, I learned a year ago that the body needs a few different diets to dial in on, just like training if you do the same thing every day it will not work anymore; your body becomes used to it. This time I decided to go - low complex carb and low fat, basically giving myself 200 simple sugars a day but only around my workouts or cardio with a lot of protein. It was pretty simple, but hard to stick with because there were no carbs attached to meals unless I was training.

I: How do you feel the NPC competition and competitors stack up to other federations?

D: I have competed in both federations, before the "physique" came out in the NPC and IFBB, some of the other stages were the only place for a guy my size to stand.  They too had amazing competitions and talent. But, as in all sports, there is evolution and the big players acknowledge there is change. The change in this instance is the shift of top talent from other organizations to the NPC and IFBB. I am a great example of that and have watched several of my peers do the same. I want to be a pro in an organization where I can compete for MONEY! Plus how cool would it be to be the first MR. Olympia Physique.... Now that is dreaming big and you have to start in the NPC to do it.

I: When can your fans expect to see you back on the NPC stage?

D: I will see my friends, family and fans in Vegas for the USA's in my humble attempt at earning my heart’s desire...... IFBB PRO STATUS.
