Travel Fitness Tips!

I thought I’d kick off my writing for Men’s Physique dot compicbyjet by discussing a topic that I know all too well, because it is the story of my life…my ‘Day Job’ if you will – the one that pays the real bills:

How to stay fit & healthy during air travel!

I truly believe I’m qualified to offer some useful tips to you since besides being a fitness model (with over 20 covers to include Men’s Health) I’m also an airline pilot. I’m a Captain for JetBlue Airways and have been flying commercially for almost 10 years and was a navy pilot prior to that. Okay so enough about me, but I figured it was necessary to establish my background to validate my experience with staying fit while traveling...

Meet Ryan Hughes: One of First Two IFBB Men's Physique Pro's

We are here with Ryan Hughes….Congrats on the big win! 09 Ryan Hughes-1What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

Thanks Ian! I am still in shock that I am an IFBB Pro! I decided to go the Men’s Physique route after realizing that a career in bodybuilding would be near impossible. With the overall size the pro bodybuilders carry these days, I just didn’t see it as being realistic for myself. I also like the Men’s Physique look better. I like a good balance of size, shape and conditioning that people can relate to and strive towards. I think this division will really help bring both new competitors to the sport and a much larger fan base as well. The sky is the limit with this new division and I am honored to represent it as one of the first two guys in the pro ranks.

Meet Matt "Swoll" Christianer: One of First Two IFBB Men's Physique Pro's

We are here with Matt “Swoll” Christianer….IMG_3894taggedCongrats on the big win! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

First off, Thank You Ian! It’s an honor to be one of two to win the first IFBB pro cards for men’s physique and to take the overall was just the icing on the cake! I had competed as a middle weight at the USA’s last July. I felt that I looked quite well as a middle weight but at my height I was almost 3 inches taller than most other middle weights at that level. So even though I’m only 5 7 ¾ I looked like shaq onstage compared to the rest of my class! Ha ha Once I heard men’s physique was coming out I knew it was for me. I had been doing a lot of fitness modeling already and they just go hand in hand .Plus it allows me to really show off my personality onstage and really ham it up for the crowd, unlike bodybuilding. I also love the fact that it’s a more natural look, a look I can keep all year round instead of bulking and cutting over and over, this also always me to be photo ready 365.

Overcoming Disappointment in Competition

"It may sound strange, but many champions are JEB_6138wtmk_JQLNXCKVENmade champions by setbacks."

---Bob Richards

I just returned from competing at the Jr USAs with a top 5 finish versus one of the most stacked fields of the competition season. Finishing in the top 5 let us all know that we belong in this category but as true competitors we all strive to finish first. So naturally it is disappointing when we fall short of that goal. We were all on the cusp of turning pro but unfortunately for many of us that was not our night...

31 Tips for Stage Ready Abs (Part I)

If your goal is to get on stage with a solid set of six pack abs, jamin thompson you don’t need to do thousands of crunches, train on fancy machines, invest in expensive supplements, or use fancy powders.

People have been building stage ready type physiques and sporting six pack abs for hundreds, if not thousands of years.  Back in those days, they didn’t have access to fancy potions, pills, berries, shake thingies, or gadgets to help them out. All they used were the basic essentials. Hard work & nutrition.

Let’s use inmates as an example. Yes I’m talking about prisoners! These guys are some of the most ripped dudes on the planet…and they never get to use 100% pure ion exchange whey, fat burners, or take expensive supplements to enhance their physiques.  They don’t get to order fancy equipment or gadgets off the internet.  The only choice these guys have is to just keep it old school!

Holding onto that Faux Bronzed Glow

So you’ve been spray tanned and your skin now resembles a piece of mahogany furniture. It’s time to get into the car or back to your hotel room and avoid contact with water lest you melt away like the Wicked Witch of the West.spraytanbooth

It can be quite a task remembering not to sweat, get wet or have any restroom mishaps. Below I have provided a general guide to preserve that impeccable color until contest time.

1. Make sure to wear LOOSE clothing without elastic or tight necklines. The general rule is to wear drawstring pants and button down shirts, preferably in a soft cotton flannel material. The greater the surface area of skin covered, the better. It is better to go commando than to try to put on underwear, otherwise you may get smudges and lines from the elastic in your skivvies....

How to remove self-tanner after a shoot or show

Many competitors and models ask me how to best remove bakingsodaself-tanner. Perhaps they must be re-sprayed for another show or shoot, or they are tired of the blotchy manner in which the self-tanner is wearing off and would rather remove it completely. The most effective means I have found to remove self-tanner of any type (Mystic, Jan Tana, Pro Tan, LiquidSunRayz) is a method that Trae Kidd passed onto me last year.

Getting Through Hard Times

Good day my blog readers! I hope you’ve all enjoyedNMshot your weekend, glad that we are all here alive and well.

Today’s blog is going to be a little different then past blogs. I’ve had quite a few things come up lately and would like to share a little bit with you all so you can understand that I am human and deal with similar things as you might.

As you all know I have been in preparation of my quest to become a professional Men’s Physique competitor for the IFBB. In this last week I have run into many obstacles that have taken my eyes off of my current goal. A few but not all of my unexpected troubles were that I lost my gym membership (no longer getting sponsored), my cell phone had broken and I had to do without for a couple weeks, I have not been able to find my NPC card in order to register, my housing has been without electric for a week or so and my financial situation has taken a major hit to where I have been in the negative for some time now.

Keep an active attitude on your days “off”

Your lean physique is not only the result of theActive Outdoor hard work you place in the gym, but what you do on your days off. In order to maintain a long standing lean, cut, and defined physique you must stay active on the days that you are not trying to manage your aggressive routine. Some individuals call it “active rest days,” while I call it “my weekends.” We all have our thresholds as to how much energy we can spit out within our work week. Due to the fact that I am on my feet working from 6am-7:30pm Monday-Thursday and Friday mornings I know that my aggressive workouts end on Friday afternoon in order to give my body and mind ample time to recover. This allows me to charge full force into the next week. However, my weekends tend to be active on another level. You want to stay active on your days off to continue to burn calories, sustain lean muscle tissue, and keep an overall defined appearance. Here is an example of my past weekend.

Life is for Living

No matter what endeavor you take upon in yourphoto (3) Life there is a phenomenon known as synergy; to put it briefly, this is when the sum of your overall effort is greater than the collective parts. Nothing could be truer of this than having a solid foundation and one of the first and last foundations we will always have is family…

Still Weighing Too Much

Good day all,

So the body is back feeling 100% this week which CIMG0185I am very happy to say. I feel so much better mentally when physically I have no troubles.

I noticed last week that my weight has not changed at all. I was hoping to loose at least a few pounds from cleaning up my eating and switching my workout style from the heavy lifting to circuit training along with cardio. Fortunately I’ve notice a slight change in my physique (body fat probably decreasing) but my weight is still 204lbs. My goal is to be around 185 give or take a few pounds by the time of the show.

The Field

Well… It is that time of the year again; Graduation SeasonIMG_5900 and with Graduations upon us it is a perfect time for a bit of reflection and anticipation for what the future holds! If you were to give one piece of advice to a new Graduate, what would it be? Well… Mine simply would be to always remain True to yourself and your ideals, to never let anybody tell you how you should live your life, and that the biggest mistake you will ever make is to not follow your Dreams!

This last weekend was my sister Ashley’s graduation from College and as I sat in the stands of the Stadium I had been at hundreds of times before, I couldn’t help but reflect on all the experiences, but I also had an overwhelming feeling that something was different!...

The Hair Issue...Getting to the Root of the Problem

Most competitors will resort to some form of hair reduction or removal in order to enhance muscle definition. But if this is new territory for you, you may be wondering which method works best for you. Let’s review some popular hair removal methods:

· Shaving – This is probably the most common form of hair removal since it is cheap and easy to do. However, if you are embarking on this form of hair eradication on your body, you may not be prepared for the possible nicks, ingrown hairs and razor rash you may develop. And unless...

Lagging Bodyparts: Upper Chest

As a competitor in this new Men’s Physique division, bobbychest2we are all trying to figure out what the judges are really looking for. Your guess is as good as mine but one thing I know for sure is that balance and symmetry play a role in their decision. One of the most noticeable things I’ve seen in a lot of competitors, as well as most guys in general, is that their upper chest is underdeveloped relative to the rest of their chest. So to help out those of you that fall into this category here is a workout that I put my PT by Joe (ptbyjoellc.com/) and JamCore Physique Factory (www.facebook.com/pages/The-JamCore-Physique-Factory/218571681502085) through.

As with all my workouts, I do them heavy, fast and intense. If you’re going to do it, you may as well do it right. If you’re content thinking you’re the alpha male in your gym then go ahead and keep doing your thing but if you want to create changes in your physique then it’s time to step it up. The routine is comprised of 4 groups of exercises. They are as follows:

Controlling Your Weight

When we think of the words "controlling your weight" we automatically think of food and exercise. In the fitness business, "controlling one's weight" also refers to the positive (concentric) and negative (eccentric) movements performed during the exercise. So many times, I see people in the gym who could potentially reap so much more out of their exercises if they would simply learn to control their poundage that they are lifting, rather than letting it control them. In order to get maximal results from a movement, it is essential to learn to master the art of breath control and focus on the muscle being worked.  I use the bench press as an example. How we "control our weight" will impact how the muscle is worked with respect to the pectoral muscles, anterior deltoids, triceps, and even the lats.

All Uphill From Here...

In Fitness just as in Life there are a lot of trends218526_1785461881958_1401864789_31773601_5373380_o that come and go, but certain things will always hold true and one thing that will NEVER change is that things that are worth having or doing are not easy, nor should they be! It is often times these difficult tasks that many people stay far away from and because of this they never realize their full potential or the amazing feeling of absolute accomplishment! Remember without Rain, there would never be a Rainbow…

I remember it like it was yesterday, standing there looking up and thinking to myself that it was A LONG way! What if I fell? What if people saw me struggle? What if I couldn’t make it? These are all questions that go through your mind when you prepare yourself for a set of Hill Sprints, but there is one question that trumps all of the others…

Turn Up the Intensity

Hey guys,183496_557716121630_136902790_32374788_5029912_n
Hope all are doing well out there.
So, it’s Wednesday and I wanted to get to you and let you know how things are going with my recent injury situation.

Through the end of last week I kept my workout the same, doing the circuit routine with lighter weight and following that with 20-30mins of cardio. I decided to take the whole weekend off along with Monday since I had a long work day and my body was pretty stressed.

I returned to workout yesterday and my back felt about 90-95%. So I decided to push myself and see how I felt after my workout. I did the same circuit routine but added more weight and switched up my rep range. I did three sets of each exercise (plus a warm-up) at 15-20 reps, 6-8 reps and 10-15 reps.

Professionalism and Nothing Less

I have not been in the industry for a long period of time, Freerunner_behind the scenesbut if I could give one ever lasting piece of advice to aspiring actors/actresses, models, or stunt men/women I would share this statement: Always conduct yourself as a professional business. Your actions, attitude, and character are a representation of your own business, LLC, and or corporation which in essence is your first and last name.   I have heard countless horror stories from photographers, directors, and agents in regards to the bad taste that has been left in their mouth from unprofessional talent. This is a small market when you find your way to the top so you better believe that word spreads quickly.  In the age of technology all it takes is a click of a button or a single ring of the phone to see if you carry a history of professionalism.

Here are a few suggestions that will help you sustain a long standing career in the entertainment industry you are pursuing.
