In 2006 two little known strongmen were approached to have their lives invaded and documented by a pair of mildly delusional but talented movie producers in what seemed an impossible idea. Derek Poundstone was in Connecticut preparing for America's Strongest Man amongst other major strength contests while Travis Ortmayer was in Texas just making his mark in the game.I was invited by the producers over the Anrold weekend to view their film about two people I know well. In the end, it was amazingly raw and real.
Six long and arduous years later, the filming was completed, the story lines written and so began the post production for what would become known as BOSS - Brothers of Stone and Steel. This rambling idea turned reality is a behind the scenes of triumph, injury, recovery and eventual downfall for one of the two athletes. Sitting besides strength legends Odd Haugen, Zydrunas Savickas, Magnus Ver Magnusson, Vitatus Lalas, Derek Poundstone and many others, it was neat to see the behind the scenes, albeit mildly voyeuristic... lives of these two great athletes.
Those in the game long enough will recognize some of the names and faces of the sport splashed throughout the movie. Whether captured by happenstance or with artistic purpose, these names helped in varying ways to define these two athletes into strength sport history. When and if this movie is released to the public, it is worth a watch. Not just because you are a fan of the athletes in question, but because it is a fantastic portrayal of the sacrifice and injurious state our sport dished to it's players.
