So you think you're a prep coach? (What Grinds "Grechy's" Gears)

What grinds grechys gears so you think youre a prep coachSo you think you’re a Prep Coach?

by Mark "Grechy" Grech

You just competed in your very first Novice competition. After that gruelling battle in front of a crowd of about 27 people, you’re proud to walk off stage with a third place trophy! Hey, so what if there were only 3 competitors in your category, your friends that didn’t show up to watch you on the day won’t know that. You’re walking away with some hardware and at the end of the day that $13 plastic trophy is all that matters. Now, it’s time to step up to the big leagues, you’re ready to pass on your wisdom and knowledge. The experience of your very first novice show has opened the doors for you to a world of opportunities. It’s time to become a prep coach!

Mark Grechy Grech Rx Muscle AustraliaNothing grinds my gears more than an inexperienced prep coach. So many people these days are offering their expertise as a contest preparation coach with hardly any on stage experience, nutritional knowledge or education in training. They read a couple of forums on a bodybuilding website, take a few notes, rip off a few ideas from prep coaches they have had in the past, plagiarise a few quotes from Dave Palumbo after listening to Heavy Muscle Radio, then construct a nutritional plan for their client by dividing their food intake to six meals per day, consisting of only chicken breast, broccoli and basmati rice. Hey, they might even throw in a few fats here and there if they noticed someone posting on Facebook that they do so during their contest prep. It’s all so simple; I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do it!

dumb fitball squatsBut it’s not just the inexperience of a prep coach that pisses me off. One thing I hate more than anything is a prep coach who rides the coat-tails of the success of one of their competitors. This show isn’t about you. Take the spot light off yourself for 2 seconds and let your client enjoy their moment. I’ve seen prep coaches go to the lengths of standing directly in front of the stage and mimicking their clients posing routine as he or she are up there performing in their 1 minute opportunity to be judged as a individual. At one show I went to, people in the crowd totally ignored the poor girl on stage and watched her egotistical spastic of a coach in the crowd performing a posing routine in order to advertise the fact that the person on stage wouldn’t of been up their without their guidance or advice. Get the fuck over yourself you off-seasoned fat-arsed blimp. The day is all about them, NOT YOU! How about you walk on stage and knock your client out of the way during their trophy presentation you jealous douche bag. It always makes me laugh when I see a prep coach try and take all the credit for their clients success, especially when they their client has achieved more than they ever have in just their very first show. A prep coach should feel the satisfaction knowing that their client has had the best possible experience on stage, whether they walked away with a trophy or not. It’s about them enjoying their time on stage, and walking off with the feeling that it was all worth it, and they can’t wait to do it all again! It’s about giving back to the sport. The more happy competitors we have walking off stage, the bigger and better our sport will become!

My advice would be to really do your research when looking at hiring a prep coach. Look for someone with reputation, experience and credit in the industry. Look at the Jon Davie’s, Charlie Duca’s and to a lesser extent the Scott Goble’s for advice, not some pin dick who thinks he knows the in’s and out’s of contest preparation just because he or she has won a state title in a huge line-up of 2 or 3 competitors who didn’t even know about contest colour before turning up on the day of the show. People with years of experience in the industry, who have hopped on stage on numerous occasions and have walked off stage with admirable results against respectable competition, are the people you should be seeking advice from. Not the dumb arse no-bodies without any experience or knowledge what-so-ever.

Love always,
Mark Grechy Grech
