If you are like most folks that enjoy weight training you probably find you have favorite exercises and movements that you are strong and comfortable with. The problem that can happen is relying on doing the same workouts over and over and expecting to get a better result. I’m sure everyone adds weight, increases reps and changes the order of exercises.
I question whether you are doing entirely different workouts to achieve entirely better results. I come from a bodybuilding back ground so the typical “bodybuilding routine has always been my bread and butter (FYI: bread and butter are bad). I have looked for other workouts to try to achieve different and better results for my physique. Some examples are yoga, kettle bell training and some core balance workouts. Switching from bodybuilding to physique, it only makes sense to switch training.
I no longer am training to get bigger and stronger but to balance my overall physique to the best fit to win in the Men’s Physique Division. Key things I have been focusing on are tightening my waist and core. Some things that work against that are heavy lifting over your head whether its shoulder presses or even heavy squats and dead lifts. A couple other things I’m working on is a balanced physique and rounder muscle bellies. I see a lot of guys focusing on one part more than another too often and have some imbalances in their physique. Maybe you have a thick rounded chest with under developed shoulders or huge triceps with minimum bicep growth. The point being you really may need to take a look at your body and ask for some honest advice from trusted folks in the industry to help you make the changes needed because as physique athletes we sometimes let ourselves believe things that aren’t correct.
Look into some other training options you haven’t been doing in order to achieve that balanced look you may be lacking. Bring it in and win with your physique on the stage. Write out some new routines that you stick to, maybe it’s time to shorten the chest workout and add a little more to your back workout. Take some group classes that offer stretching of the muscle bellies to help a more rounded growth to the muscles that need it. Genetics is only an excuse, you may have to work harder than others; but, all can be achieved with focus, dedication, and hard work.
I am always open to offer honest feedback and definitely open to feedback about myself. Feel free to contact me for any questions and advice as you sharpen your physique to win!
