Training and competing is a personal sport. We often get into training early on for ourselves. Usually it is part of a team conditioning program. It’s important to remember the team. Though you are training for yourself…don’t forget you may be training for more than just yourself.
Being an amateur athlete I have always competed for fun with the goal to win the local shows. I never considered myself to have any fans, just people watching from the audience. Once I started competing at the National Level in 2011 things changed a bit. I started getting friend requests on Facebook, being asked to do interviews, and flagged down in random places by people to say hi. It’s an awesome feeling to have people watching and rooting for you.
I would like to send out a big “thank you!” to a “fan.” Just yesterday I received a prepaid envelope and card in the mail. It was from someone who I have never met that considered themselves to be a fan of mine and asked for a sign picture!! I know I’m not a celebrity or someone famous, but it was an awesome compliment to think someone actually wants a sign picture of me! We are more than competitors, we are inspirers.
I’m just a skinny kid from Paw Paw who decided to change his physique with hard work and dedication. Then take the physique he had built and sculpted to the stage and to compete against some of the best national level and pro competitors in the country. Now, it feels like I’m not competing just for myself, but I feel like I owe my fans a victory or the very least the best I can give it. So for 2012 I am sitting out till I get the eye of the tiger back. Till I know I can put 100% into my training, diet, and posing. I’m still here training, watching, learning, and teaching. Watch out because I will be back and when I come back I’ll be bringing my best!
For those that are already on or those considering stepping on stage, bring your best. You may never know who’s life you improve by sharing what you love to do with the world.
