GOALS FUEL MOTIVATION

RegieGoalSetting2How many times have you heard someone say that they’re hitting the gym because they have a vacation coming up or because they want to fit into a wedding dress or look good at a reunion? Oftentimes these goals are explained in fairly general terms. The sentence normally starts with “I want to…” or “I just need to…” and ends with one of the following:

“…get into shape before the wedding.”

“…tone a little for my vacation.”

“…tighten up for the reunion.”

If you interact with people, then I’m sure that you’ve heard these sayings as they’re fairly common. Heck, you might have even uttered some of these sentences yourself.

While looking good at the beach and fitting into a wedding dress are worthy goals, they lack specificity. The goals themselves might be motivating for a short period of time but they don’t explain what YOU are going to do. For example, how will your eating, training and behavior change so that you can fit into that tailored wedding dress? How are you going to acttomorrowto bring that goal of toning up one step closer to reality?

Goal setting doesn’t have to be complicated but it should always be specific. If you’re serious about becoming a fit-body, then I would suggest that you create S.M.A.R.T. goals. The S.M.A.R.T. technique is typically used to set business objectives, however it is readily applicable to fitness.  S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time bound

Use this technique when you set your own goals.  This will go a long way towards keeping you motivated as you climb one step at a time in pursuit of your ultimate ambitions!
