Joining us today is the Overall Winner at the NPC Armburst Pro Gym Warrior Classic, Tyler Markovich. Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
My interest in Men’s Physique Division began at the start of the year through a friend that had been a huge influence in my life when I was younger. His name is Kyle VanHorn. He has always been into fitness and also competed in bodybuilding taking 1st and overall at his first and only competition. We both shared the passion of training and disciplining our bodies because it is so easily related to our faith. After we spoke that night, I looked into Men’s Physique. It was just introduced the year before and still very new. I found the healthy lifestyle and discipline of Men’s Physique very appealing, so I decided to do a show.
Can you tell us a little about the show in which you just competed?
I recently just competed at the 2012 NPC Armburst Pro Gym Warrior Classic. There were so many other amazing competitors inside and out. The venue was incredible and had a great reputation from the previous year. The Warrior Class also set a record this year with having close to 300 competitors, along with the most competitors for the Men’s Physique division. I was placed in the class B division, which had a total of 25 great athletes.
How did you feel after pre-judging?
The entire thing went so fast, since we had so many competitors in my division, they had to keep things going relatively quick. I was blessed enough to be in first callouts, along with a good friend of mine, Ryan Hediger. We both had been working together on posing with my Coach Matheo Perez with Silverback Body Design as well as Team Total Package. Ryan has such a great and humble attitude that it made competing with him a huge privilege for me. After first callouts they then told Matt Ward, Ryan, and myself to exit the stage. At that moment we both knew we were battling now over top 3. So to me this was the absolute best case scenario to exit the stage knowing that a friend of mine and myself were chosen for top 3 out of 25 other competitors.
How did you feel about the final results of the show?
The feeling I experienced at finals on stage will never be forgotten. After 3rd place was announced to Matt Ward, I knew that Ryan and I had made top two. At that moment I felt my prayers were answered. No matter who was called out next I was already beyond excited. Ryan was then announced for 2nd and I was awarded 1st, which was such a bittersweet moment. He was just as deserving, if not more, for that 1st place spot. No words can describe that moment, standing on stage privileged and blessed enough to be awarded 1st place and having a good friend right by your side at 2nd. Next they lined up all class winners to decide the overall Men’s Physique winner. I’m still speechless and humbled that I was chosen. It was an incredible experience and I still feel so grateful for the overall award.
What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
God willing I would love to pursue more of a career in Men’s Physique. In my opinion, it has a very good appeal of a healthy lifestyle. Also, a personal goal and desire of mine while pursuing a career in Men’s Physique, is to be seen as a humble, positive, and encouraging competitor to others. I do believe being physically fit is very important, but beyond that, the heart and the character of a person is much more valuable. I personally put my faith before my physical fitness and pray that it can be seen by others through my actions.
Age: 25
Hometown: Great Falls Montana
Current city: Centennial Colorado
Years training: 7
Education: Associates in Fire Science Technology
Occupation: Firefighter with Eagle River Fire Protection District
Favorite type of training: I love Hypotrophy training and being able to train with friends and others that have a desire to learn.
Favorite body part to train: I always look forward to Back Days
Favorite exercise: I enjoy just plain pull ups. Always starting at a complete rest doing 3-5 sets to failure for a warm up on back day.
Rep range: 8-15
Number of sets: 3-5
Typical workout duration: It can be as fast as 30 minutes or can take my time to two hours. It depends on what priorities I have that day and if I’m going to do cardio.
Training split:
My training split is pretty unique because I work on a 6 day schedule with my Job. We work 48 hours straight and have 4 days off. So my first day on shift is my only rest day in the week but still do cardio unless we are running a lot of calls. Second day on shift is shoulders since we are somewhat limited to lifting equipment at a firehouse. First day off I kill legs so I can recoup enough on my days off that it doesn’t impair me from having to run stairs on shift. Next chest, followed by back, and arms, before shift. I do at least 30 minutes of cardio of stairs after each workout to burn fat and also help with fitness for my job.
Typical daily eating plan:
I eat every 3 hours with a total macro goal different each day. I carb cycle having heavy carbs on leg and back day, moderate carbs with chest and arms, and low carbs on my rest day. My protein and fats stay pretty consistent daily and spread out evenly throughout.
Favorite supplement:
Quest Bars are amazing and little to no carbs so there perfect and diet friendly. As far as prework outs go, I have gone from Jack3d, to C4, to Man Sports Octane, and I really like them all. I don’t have that supplement I can’t live without. Unless Tokyo Joe’s can be considered a favorite supplement, if so that is at the top of the list.
What peaked your interest in training?
When people ask why I work out I have four major reasons. Number one is my body was given to me by God and so I should live a healthy lifestyle and take care of it. Second, my body is not my own, but it also belongs to my someday future wife and I want it to look good for her and to be able to take care of her. Thirdly, I desire to be physically fit so that I can be used in my career as a Firefighter to help those that need it. Lastly, I just straight up enjoy training and everything about it.
Who influences/influenced your training?
Ha, first person to influence my training was my older sister always calling me skinny when I was younger. Later on in life, I mentored some high school students and found that using training and lifting together was a great way of discipling and mentoring, creating a close bond. It was a huge accountability to me not only physically, but also with my faith. Having Matheo Perez with Silverback Body Design was a huge accountability to me as well. I know without his influence, mentorship, and dedication, I would not have done so well at the Warrior Classic. I’d also like to thank Cameron and Tracy Bodner with Team Total Package who helped immensely with posing through their great advice and wisdom.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?
The biggest thing that keeps me disciplined and on track is my personal relationship with God. When training and dieting, I can relate it easily with my faith. By disciplining my body and not always giving it what it wants, such as sweets and other unhealthy but amazing tasteful things, I can feed it what it needs to grow and become stronger. So for me personally, I know being disciplined strengthens me when times are rough and I may want to lash out on someone (especially carb depleted), but I can control that urge and continue to be positive and encouraging instead.
Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
I enjoy playing percussion from a djembe, Cajon, bongos, congas, to many others. As well as bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and a little ukulele. I substitute taught for two years as well as coached track and football for a local Christian High school.
