Meet the Man in The Shorts: John Rushford

JB5 4594 DCFBIKZMTGMeet the Man in the shorts John Rushford: Attorney, Parent, Husband and NPC Men’s Physique competitor!

Attorney John Rushford, age 50, hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He’s been weight training nearly two decades, earned his B.A. from Boston College and his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh. Let’s learn some more about this Men’s Physique competitor!

Congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?

I like that it allows for a more natural physique.

Can you tell us a little about the show in which you most recently competed?

Coming back from a poor showing last year at Masters, working with Jeremy Buendia (www.fitbodyfusion.com) I took 4th in the NPC Pittsburgh Masters Division Class B.

How did you feel after pre-judging?

I felt really good. I was happy my conditioning was pretty on.  My posing could have been better but it was way better than it had been!

How did you feel about the final results of the show?

I was happy to place and qualify for North Americans.  As Gary Udit has told me, “First you aim to place then you aim to win.”

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?

I would love to turn pro.  I think, given that I just turned the big 5-0, I can hopefully encourage others that age should not be a barrier to being as fit as you can.  I have to say this prep has been the most fun I have ever had.  I knew what I wanted and how I would get there. I owe Jeremy a lot for keeping me focused on the job at hand.

Favorite type of training: High intensity style!  Get in and get out!

Favorite body part to train: Arms!

Favorite exercise: Reverse grip bench for triceps.

Rep range: Eight-12.

john rushford attorneyNumber of sets: Eighteen, depending on body part.

Typical workout duration: About an hour.

Training split: Legs, chest, back, shoulders, and arms and repeat.

Typical daily eating plan: Five meals plus a post-workout shake.  Low fat, high protein, and good fats… almonds,  MCT oil.

Favorite supplement: GlycoJect from Evogen.

What peaked your interest in training?

When I went to North Americans in Cleveland in 2011 and I saw my first physique show.  A couple people asked me if I was competing. Ha! I knew I wanted to, though!

Who influences/influenced your training?

I have had a lot of help from good people over the years.  As I am in contest mode, I rely heavily on my trainer to help me elevate my physique to the best possible condition.

Sports: I ran track and cross country at Boston College.

Special interests: Food, cooking, reading, art and music.

Physique, fitness, bodybuilding competition history:

I have competed in eight NPC shows (3 of them national shows). I placed in five of these shows. Highlights include 4th place at the North Americans in 2012, 3rd place in the open tall class at the NPC West Virginia Cup and 5th place at the NPC Pittsburgh in 2013 and 4th place in the Masters class at the 2014 NPC Pittsburgh Championships.

JB5 8861 RAAMXMOTSMAwards and/or accomplishments:

Juggling being an attorney, parent, husband and physique competitor while keeping a level head.

Next planned competition:  2014 NPC Masters Nationals.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?

I love a challenge and I truly love what I am doing.  Most people dread dieting and prep; I love it!

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:

I recently performed as Egyptian Lead Soldier in the Pittsburgh Opera’s performances of Aida.
