The Worlds Strongest Man qualifying has wrapped up and a few surprises, injuries and illness helped shape what has now become the final 10. Highlights of the weeks qualifying include:
American Mike Jenkins making his return after knee surgery saw him sit out all competition since last years WSM, came down with a nasty gastrointestinal issue. Mike received antibiotics, copious IV's to replace fluids but it wasn't enough as Big Mike passed out after 1 repetition in the Squat event. Medical personnel rushed to him and he was taken back for further evaluation. However, Mike came back with a vengeance and with a 1st and 2nd place in the final two events, garnered enough points to make his 3rd finals appearance.
Laurence Shahlaei suffered a quadricep rupture in the Squat event and wil be out of competition for an indefinate period of time.
In Group 4, the strongest performer of the qualifying events in any group was American Brian Shaw who dominated nearly every event he contested. With a 22 second Atlas Stone load, he was almost 10 seconds faster than any other athlete in any other group.
American WSM rookie and pro strongman for less than a year Robert Oberst, placed second in his group and qualified for the finals.
