How does your family respond to your competing?
For the most part, my family has been very supportive of anything I’ve done! They are always cheering me on, supporting me in any way I need. My sisters and best friends all understand that I don’t go out much, so they are fine with coming to my house to spend time with me. Especially since I cook for them and it’s always something healthy. (I think that’s the only reason they come over.. for the food.. LOL). I have never heard a bad word come from my family about my decision to compete. I know I am so lucky in that respect because there are many competitors who don’t have familial support. I am so grateful to have these people around me.
What kind of goals have you set for yourself, short-term and long-term?
Short-term? I am trying to make it to October! LOL. Funny but true. I have been dieting down for this show since March and it’s starting to take a toll on me, but I will live! I am naturally a big girl (at my heaviest I was almost 300 lbs), so getting and maintaining a level leanness isn’t the easiest thing to do, while trying to have a somewhat normal life. I’m proud to say I’m working with a great coach, who has made this process as painless as possible. I want to come in the best condition humanly possible for my physique.
Long-Term: Personally, I would like to continue to compete; to manipulate my body and take it further each time. I would love to get to a level where I can maintain leanness, be healthy and NOT suffer for it. I honestly enjoy this; the training, the pressure, even the dieting. But on a bigger scale, I want to continue to inspire people who follow me on FB, IG, twitter... I want people to see me, see my struggles, successes and failures and believe that it IS possible to change your body, your lifestyle if you want to. I want to compete, but I want to help others acheive their best selves. Whether on stage, or in everyday life. I try to give folks an unfiltered version of what this is REALLY like. My 19 hour days, hunger pains, 5-6 am cardio sessions on little sleep, dealing with injury; trying to better myself, but I’m doing it in the public eye. That’s why I post as many “non-flattering” photos and videos as I am comfortable with. I think it helps people to see that it’s NOT always perfect and that we do mess up from time to time. I don’t want people to think it’s all glamorous because of what they may see in a mag.
What's currently on your iPod?
Ha.. I hardly listen to the radio or watch Television, so I mainly hear about music via FB, IG, etc. I’m such an old lady! I’m glad I have nieces and younger sisters who keep me in the loop! I have a lot of Beyonce, Rihanna, Drake, DJ Khaled, and I’ve recently gotten into, Pink’s recent music, JT, J. Cole and Wale. I do have some Old School Britney Spears on there (Baby.... One More Time was my SONG!). But I gravitate towards Rihanna’s new album, “Unapologetic” because I love her spirit … she brings out that wild child in me.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of the bodybuilding world? Well, I absolutely LOVE to cook. I like to invent, well re-invent my favorite foods, like pizza, pancakes, and anything with cheese, into a healthier version for my treat/cheat meal. I’m a terrible baker, but I have a good time trying!
I also love to read and learn! I am quite the nerd. I LOVE watching Jeopardy (when I get home in time for it) and clicking link after link in Wikipedia; so I spend a lot of time just reading randomness; which is probably why I am filled with random knowledge! :-) Also, I’ve been told I’m funny, so I may try my hand at comedy! What’s better than a bodybuilder that can tell a mean joke? Sometimes I get into telling a story, not meaning to be funny at all but people wind up laughing! I’m funniest after a good meal, since I’m happiest. Guess I shouldn’t do my act on a low carb day, huh? :-)
Do you have a favorite exercise?
Shoot.. That’s so difficult. When I’m completely healthy, it has to be full, from the floor deadlifts. Sheer power. I feel it EVERYWHERE. I used to be in love with squats, but as I’ve gotten older, my knees can’t take it for too long, so I have to switch it up.
Competition history: NPC 2012 Atlantic States, Women’s Physique, 14th place
Next competition: NPC 2013 Brooklyn Grand Prix (October 5th) and NPC 2013 New York State Grand Prix (October 12th)
Favorite Fitness Tip: Diet is everything! You cannot out train bad eating habits! I learned that the hard way!
Who would you like to thank? The list is too long to name names, because I am certain to forget someone and I do NOT want hurt feelings! But they all know who they are. My sisters, close friends who I consider family, ALL understand what I’m doing and why. For understanding why I can’t eat/drink with them, and why I can’t spend as much time with them as I’d like to. For accepting what I’ve done with my life and where I’m going with it, even though they may not be into it like I am. I know I can be difficult to deal with, particularly when dieting and I may snap at folks, but they all know I don’t mean anything by it. I appreciate their help, their love and their support. Also, I want to thank my FB/IG fans, and my Facebook and gym families for your support; even if we’ve never met in person! I treasure it all: texts, emails, hugs, a conversation, FB posts, kind words, supplement samples, anything... It’s all appreciated, never taken for granted and will always be remembered. I couldn’t do any of this without ALL of them.
