It seems with the growing popularity of the women's physique division in the IFBB pro ranks, the NPFC/IFBB amateur ranks in Australia have decided to follow suit with the addition of the new class.
It seems like a perfect fit in Australia, as many of our figure competitors look as though they belong in that class that is available in the pro and amateur ranks already in the United States along with a few other countries.
We found out about this when the IFBB posters for this year's upcoming state contests we're released. When we looked at the categories we noticed under the women's classes "Physique (new division)" was there. I'm sure the sight of this will delight many of the current figure competitors around Australia, and some it will confuse, with many of the women unsure if they should go for a division that they haven't seen before, even if they are more suited to it.
I see this as a huge opportunity for many of the figure competitors currently competing around Australia, as Australian figure competitors are generally on the more muscular/conditioned side in comparison to their American counterparts, as on a pro level generally a softer look is more sort after. There are several women out there that could establish themselves as the face & standard of women's physique in Australia and sit them in good stead to potentially earn themselves an IFBB Pro card.
We contacted Tony Doherty the promoter of the IFBB Victorian state championships, Australian Pro Grand Prix & owner of the Doherty's Gym franchise, regarding the matter and if it would be featured in the amateur show at Fit X 2013 and Tony has confirmed there will indeed be the division there and at all of the IFBB state shows & nationals this year, wether a pro card will be handed to the winner at Fit X 2013 will remain to be seen.
Where's Men's Physique?
I assume the IFBB in Australia are holding out on the men's physique, and have chosen to take the more logical approach, to go with a class that they know they'll be able to fill, and should also bring more crowd interest.
