IFBB Figure Pro Kenyatta Jones-Arietta:Motor City Memories...Thoughts of Going Home
I was raised in Detroit but left when my daughter was two in pursuit of a better life. With the passing of my father and my grandparents with whom I was very close, compacted with the incarceration of my younger brother, my visits back home have been few and far between. I guess you could say the thoughts of going back were not pleasurable for me.
The road I chose to a new life outside of Detroit was not always an easy one. I definitely hit some bumps along the way but I had left Detroit and was determined. There was no turning back.
Now here I stand some twenty years later...fame and fortune didn't find me but my soulmate did. And with him we're building a life that our children are extremely proud of.
But with that foundation, I want them to know where I come from. My life as a child in Detroit wasn't a depressing story. I enjoyed riding my bike on the streets of Detroit's West Side with my cousin, Renee in the summer months. How I loved going fishing with my uncle Joe down by the Ambassador Bridge and visiting the tackle shop near the old Tiger Stadium.
Yummy was eating fudge at The Fudgery in Greektown after enjoying a deep dish seafood pie at Pizzapapalis. I haven't even begun to tell the kids about my visits to Belle Isle or my days as a cheerleader at Osborn High School... how I enjoyed Dee's pizza and chili fries as my afternoon snack before heading home.
I was actually out for a walk a few days ago and recounted my long walks on Gratiot Avenue with my Walkman when I was a teen...Outdoor cardio didn't just start with competing. So many memories. So much of me and my hometown to share.
Rudy and I brought the boys for their first visit two winters ago. We played tourists that year, hitting the Detroit Institute of Art and the Henry Ford Museum; Taste testing Coney Dogs at the American and Lafayette Coney Islands. (Yes! Mommy ate a Coney Dog!).
We stayed downtown at the Renaissance Center overlooking Canada and the Detroit River. The boys enjoyed exploring The People Mover circling around downtown Detroit. I can remember when it first went in. My grandfather, who was not a fan of mayor Coleman Young couldn't stop belly aching about what a waste of money it was. I think he was wrong.
Our trip with the boys was a great time. I had been looking for an excuse to go back and continue to reconnect and needless to say, I found one...
