On Saturday, July 5, 2014, Edmonton, Alberta was host to the 2014 CBBF Bikini, Figure, Fitness and Physique Championships. This was the first of two Open National shows held in Canada every year and to date this was the largest with well over 470 of Canada's best competitors. Unlike the National level shows in the States, Canada only hands out approximately 17 IFBB Pro Cards each year, so to say that these competitors are ready to battle it out for not just Top spot, but the Overall spot would be an understatement.
This year, 11 IFBB Pro Cards would be awarded to the Overall winners and several Master Overall winners ranging from Men's Physique to Masters Bikini. Classes ranged from three competitors to approximately 33 and some of the classes had six groupings of competitors to go through!
As one can imagine this would not be an easy task and, as it turns out, not only was this event the largest to date, it was also the longest pre-judging and finals – marathon would be a more appropriate word choice. Each competitor had their well deserved moment in front of the esteemed judges, where every turn, smile, hand position, tan, suit and mandatory pose was critiqued and compared in order for the judges to select the Top 5 and award the Top 3 in the Finals and to make the ultimate decision on who would be the lucky 12 to take home and become one of Canada's newest IFBB Pros.

Every year, there always seems to be one competitor who stands out from the crowd – not just because of their physique but because of their heart, determination and inspirational story that brought them to stage. This year was no exception. A standing ovation was offered from the judges to every single person in attendance, and not a dry eye to be seen, as Figure competitor, Vanessa Rogers, inspired everyone when she stepped out on stage after being left a quadriplegic due to a car accident. With nothing more than a cane, she graced the stage, hit every pose, and reminded each and every one of us why we love this sport.
In 1999, at the age of 16, Vanessa Rogers was involved in a horrible car accident where she broke her neck in four places, was paralyzed from the neck down, and deemed a complete quadriplegic by her doctors. Every test done concluded that she would never be able to live the life or a normal able-bodied individual and would need someone to care for her pretty much 24/7. In 2012 she joined a gym and in 2013 Vanessa started to train for a competition. Vanessa placed third at the 2013 Muscle Beach Fall Classic in Figure Medium and won the Alberta Bodybuilding Association's award for The Most Inspirational. Vanessa qualified at the Provincials on June 21, 2014 for Nationals by placing fourth in Figure. At the 2014 CBBF Nationals in Edmonton, Vanessa placed ninth.
With a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work and determination she now walks with only a cane for stability. Vanessa wanted to prove to those who doubted her that they were wrong, and in the end she showed that there are no excuses for not accomplishing goals that you put your all into.
Overall, the 2014 CBBF Bikini, Fitness, Figure and Physique Championships proved successful and has added 12 outstanding new Canadian IFBB Pros to the list of the many great Canadian IFBB Pros before. On September 6, 2014, Quebec will host Part 2 of the CBBF Nationals with the Men's and Women's Bodybuilding.
