When you really think about weight training, it all comes down to those last 2-3 reps. For most people that work out with weights they have 2 major goals in mind to increase their muscle size and strength. In order to achieve these goals you have to be willing to push your muscles further than they have gone before, in order to force them to grow and adapt to the demands you are placing on them. Sure there are lots of techniques to confuse the muscles and numerous different exercises to implement in order to work them from every possible angle, but in the end it still all comes down to those last 2-3 reps.
The first few reps and even the first few sets you do for a particular exercise are really just causing your muscles to work up to their work load capacity. Essentially you are just bringing them to the point they were at last time you finished training them with that same exercise. It is all leading up to those last 2-3 reps. That's when you finally push your muscles past what they were previously capable of doing. It's those last 2-3 reps that determine if you have pushed hard enough to elicit the need for new muscle growth to take place or if you have only worked the muscle within its already capable work load capacity.
When I get down to those last 2-3 reps in any particular exercises that's what I call the "PAY OFF!" I know that all the previous repetitions I have done up to this point only served one purpose, to prime the muscle for growth. The last 2-3 reps is when it's time to make them grow. Force the muscle into a new and previously unexplored territory of work load capacity. That's the only way to make make your muscles grow and anything short of that is a waste of your time!
So next time you're in the gym working out and you're performing an exercise and you start feeling drained, the muscle is burning, and everything inside you is yelling at you telling you to stop. DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! Push past it and force out those last 2-3 reps. You will be glad you did, because that's where the growth is going to take place and that's really what it's all about!
