Natural Breath Fresheners That Won’t Bust Your Contest Prep

Competitorscinnamon often deal with changes in their meal plans which may result in breath that isn’t always the freshest.  The problem is that the most readily available commercial breath freshening mints have sugar or artificial sweeteners which can cause bloating and potentially jeopardize a contest prep plan if consumed frequently.  Luckily, there are a number of natural food substances which are very effective at freshening the breath and which are also safe to consume during contest prep.  Try any of the following in place of mints or mouthwashes.

Lemons & Limes – Grab a lemon or lime wedge to chew on.

Apples – The hard texture of apples effectively removes excess plaque from teeth, while the apple’s juices increase saliva production which makes it more difficult for bacteria to grow in.

Parsley – Though commonly used as a garnish, parsley is packed with chlorophyll which effectively neutralizes bad odors, even strong ones like garlic.

Cloves – Cloves are the dried, unexpanded flower buds of a small evergreen tree and are packed with flavor.  Chew on a clove for breath-freshening benefits.

Peppermint – Rub a drop of peppermint oil on the tongue and gums to combat bad breath.  Peppermint tea is also great for bad breath and also aids with digestion.

Green Tea – Compounds found in green tea called polyphenols may stop the growth of bacteria which cause bad breath to develop.

Coriander – This spice has a pleasant lemony flavor which freshens the breath.

Rosemary – This spice is so fragrant and powerful that chewing just one small leaf is very effective at eradicating halitosis.

Anise Seeds – If you like the flavor of licorice, try munching on a couple of these seeds.

Cardamom Pods – Chew on a single pod for a few minutes to take care of bad breath, but do not swallow these.

Cinnamon – Whole sticks of cinnamon, when chewed on, can be very effective in treating bad breath.

If you don’t want to carry spices around, you can soak wooden toothpicks in cinnamon extract or peppermint oil, allow to dry, then use them whenever you need a pop of fresh breath.
