“Absorb what is useful. Discard what is not. Add what is uniquely your own.” ~ Bruce Lee
As our sport goes through the growing pains of any new category there should be an expectation of constant change until the “ideal” physique has been determined. Unfortunately, many athletes refuse to adapt to the changes and instead want to believe their perception of “ideal” is the benchmark all should go by. So rather than face the fact that maybe they have some improvements to make they take the easy route and claim they lost because of politics or that the judges simply have no clue what they’re doing.
One of my keys to success last season I credit to my ability to put my ego aside and take feedback for what it is, constructive criticism, rather than taking it as an insult. I personally made a habit out of seeking feedback from judges, prep coaches, fellow competitors and ex-girlfriends, who are probably the most brutally honest. If someone told me I was perfect the way I was I simply kept asking until I found someone who had some thoughts on changes I could make.
We all have muscular imbalances and weak points that are hard to see on our own. It’s great to get an objective eye to take a look and point those things out. It takes identifying those imperfections that allows you to move forward with an accurate purpose to shaping your physiques. I know I would have had no clue if I didn’t seek out critiques.
After years of doing what most of us guys do, trying to put on as much muscle as possible, I started last year out pretty heavily muscled in my back, arms that overpowered my delts and a thicker waist from the side than I’d like. Based on all the feedback I’ve received last season I will be starting out 2012 with my delts slightly bigger, arms toned down so they no longer overtake my shoulders and a thinner waist from the side view. My physique is now more balanced and streamlined. I’ve shed the unnecessary mass and created a more athletic package the judges said they wanted all because I understood I didn’t have all the answers and sought those answers out from those who knew more.
All things worth having will take work to achieve. Without the struggle during the journey you won’t be able to truly appreciate the accomplishment. So ensure yourselves a successful 2012 and seek the guidance to allow you to evolve into a championship physique!
