Many have heard the story of the seasoned Fisherman who took his son out one day to fish for crabs; as they were placing crabs in the bucket the young boy asked his father “why don’t we have a lid on the bucket, the crabs will all escape?” The father replied, “you see son, as long as there is more than one crab in the bucket, if one tries to escape, the others will grab a hold and pull it back down.”
This simple story is unfortunately very true of many people; instead of lifting others up, making them better, and in turn bettering themselves, many spend their time and energy on trying to bring others down and hold them back! You see, if we all helped one another we could all very easily escape the “Bucket” and move on to bigger, better things. Knowing that not everyone is there to help us along the way is important, realizing who they are can often times be very hard, because they may be the last person we think would hold us back. Typically it is out of jealousy or simply being too weak to follow their own dreams, so they focus their energy on discouraging ours. If I could give one paramount advice to others; it would be to surround yourself with those that lift you up and challenge you to be better! Look at many great Teams, they are made up of people that have a synergistic effect on each other and make everyone far better than they could ever be on their own! Conversely, there are also Teams made up of All-Stars that all want the individual credit and end up holding everyone back while sabotaging the entire Team; in the end the Team that may not have as much individual talent, but is a better TEAM is able to defeat the other!
In our life we are essentially players on Teams, the trick is figuring out who to surround ourselves with; we can choose to never reach our full potential by allowing others to hold us back and down or we can surround ourselves with people that support, challenge, and inspire us! In the end these are all choices that we need to make for ourselves; people will always talk, hate, and be jealous, but they are the ones that shouldn’t be allowed into our “Bucket”! Instead look for the ones that are there to challenge us with new ideas, the ones that don’t let us settle for our second best, and the ones that get behind what we want to accomplish even when it may be something they don’t have interest in!
I decided long ago to not live my life by other peoples standards and to not waste my time with those that want to bring me down, because that is EXACTLY what it is, a waste of time! There are a lot of absolutely wonderful, uplifting people in this life; when you find them, appreciate them! The best way to find these people is by being one yourself, we all have times of weakness, but before you waste your time and energy on holding someone else back, think of what more we ALL could be if we spent that very same time and energy on bettering ourselves and those around us!
