Having been a part of the Fitness Industry Professionally for over 15 years now I have seen a lot of people and trends come and go and in fact it is very uncommon that someone stays a part of the Fitness Industry for even more than 5 years, but it doesn’t have to be that way!
First off, let’s take a look at one of the number one reasons people get out of the Fitness Industry…It harms their life; it could be financially, professionally, socially, relationships, family, and yes, even health! Too often people go in with and all or nothing outlook and totally forget that our lives are made up of many parts that together make us whole and by neglecting some of these parts in favor for others for an extended period of time is a recipe for failure! When on the other hand if we learn to balance these aspects and at times put more into one than another we are able move forward as a whole and not leave part of ourselves behind.
Some of the major downfalls that I have seen are people following eating/training plans that really should only be used for short periods (if ever), typically this is just based off of lack of long-term experience and everyone has a breaking point whether it be physically or mentally! By eating and training in a balanced fashion that takes into account your health and longevity and not just your immediate looks you actually will be able to attain greater long-term success, totally a tortoise and hare phenomenon! Another major aspect that some fall into is basically alienating themselves from those around them; family, friends, coworkers, etc. We are all human and meaningful interactions with other humans are a very necessary part of existence and by simply cutting out the world to pursue short-term physical appearances will ultimately hinder long-term success and happiness! Be absolutely sure that you DO NOT miss out on living while you are pursuing your goals and you will realize that there is much more to competing, training, and fitness than just isolation. Lastly one of the major aspects that people harm and should be the exact opposite is their health, whether it be by various drug use, metabolic burnout, physical injuries, or depression; think very hard before you do something so extreme that it may effect you permanently! Most people within the Fitness Industry will not even see a Competitive Stage, let alone a National or Pro-Level and to harm yourself simply doesn’t add up to what Fitness really is about!
As you are embarking on or continuing your journey into fitness remember to think big picture and you cannot make the big picture without all of the parts!
“Nothing is unthinkable, nothing impossible to the balanced person, provided it comes out of the needs of life and is dedicated to life’s further development.”
