Are you Photo Ready? Three Tips for Looking Your Best in Pictures

Many of us have worked hard to Camerafine tune every aspect of our physique and we naturally assume that our work will translate on camera.  This isn't always the case.  Much like perfecting your body, perfecting your "on-camera" skills takes time and effort. Below are a few tips to help you create excellent images for both personal and professional use.

Practice Makes Perfect: Don't expect your first set of pictures to be perfect.  Understanding your on-camera persona takes time.  Select a photographer who is willing to coach you.  Often times what feels most unnatural on camera looks the best in pictures.  Prior to shooting, take time to practice different poses in the mirror.  Pay attention to your facial expressions.  What looks do you like the best?  Position your body in a variety of ways to determine your best angle and consider having a friend take snapshots of you prior to the shoot so you can study yourself on film.

Looks Matter: Now is the time to focus on your looks.  Prior to shooting you should do the following: exfoliate your skin, shave, whiten your teeth, wax or pluck your eyebrows, consider getting a spray tan and coordinate your clothing selections.  Pay careful attention to clothing, especially if you are shooting with other people.  You want a look that has a cohesive overall feel; this involves finding complimentary colors and designs.  When selecting clothing for a shoot remember that solids generally photograph better than patterns. Texture is helpful and props are often an option; so grab some weights, water bottles, kettlebells, or whatever seems appropriate given the shoot.

Communication is Key: If you book a photo session for portfolio development or personal reasons, the photographer will often look to you to communicate what you want out of the shoot.  The best way to figure this out is to do your homework.  Think about your interests.  Do you play sports? Do you enjoy the gym? If you are shooting lifestyle shots, what do you typically dress in?  Look through magazines and find pictures you like.  This exercise is particularly important for fitness shoots.  Once found, put the pictures in a binder and bring them to your photographer to review.  This ensures that you will get quality pictures that reflect your style and talents.

With careful preparation and practice, you can create photos that capture you best. Do your homework before you hire a photographer and select someone who is responsive and professional.   Most importantly, relax and bring your unique personality to the shoot.  Nothing communicates better on camera than confidence and enthusiasm!
