Welcome to the first of an ongoing series dedicated to fitness models in reference to; how to get work, be prepared for photo shoots, stay fit, attire, tan, do’s & don’ts and much more.I hope you find the information helpful.
As a fitness model it is very important to contact potential industry photographers and art directors directly.Even if you have professional representation it is always best to do as much personal PR as you can.Remember, no one will take more interest in your career than yourself.
Your first step should be to get together a list of reputable industry photographers.Either talk to other fitness models for referrals, look at magazine credits and Google their names, go to a fitness events prepared with business cards and talk to working photographers at the event.Initially any experience in front of the camera will be helpful. However to get the most out of a test shoot you will want to work with someone who understands physique posing, directing and lighting.Otherwise you may be wasting your time and get poor results.
Personally, I prefer being contacted by email vs. being sent to a Facebook page.As a busy photographer I get flooded with Facebook requests and emails.Although I will eventually get to my Facebook notes, it is easier for me to read an email, view photos in the body of an email and if need be save those photos to forward to potential clients. It is always best to include some sort of physique and face shots in the email and a web site URL if you have one.Remember a picture is worth a thousand words, especially in this business. Even if they are not professional, just something to give me an idea as to what you look like prior to responding to your note.CURRENT pictures are also key.No one cares how you looked if the pictures don’t represent how you look right now. The other problem with Facebook is if I want to send a client to look at your pictures they may not have an account or want to go through the extra step of logging on to someone’s Facebook page due to time constraints.
In addition to an photos be sure to include any competitions coming up, what city you live in, if you are willing to travel to Los Angeles at your own expense, contact phone and e-mail, height, weight, hair color etc.
If you don’t already have professional pictures that represent you, in your best light, you can contact someone like myself to discuss a paid portfolio. If that’s of interest please write to [email protected] and put portfolio shoot in the subject line. You can check out some of my work at:
