Congrats on your 2011 Season! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
Being a gym rat I’ve always had an interest in bodybuilding, but never had the desire to build to that size. When Men’s Physique started, a friend of mine at the gym, who competes, kept telling me I should go for it. I thought about it, but was too nervous to take the step. Months later a couple of friends of mine were going to do The Titans Grand Prix NPC Event and I was like…I’m gonna do this, so I did.
Can you tell us a little about the Competition you just competed in?
I competed in back-to-back shows. The first was The Titans and then a week later at Border States. Since it was still new to me, I was still in cloud nine from the first shows win. So it was sort of a surreal experience. It was kind of a last minute decision, so the night before I went and got sprayed at the local tanning joint, packed my car, got up the following morning and drove to the athlete meeting in San Diego. Since this time I was by myself, I got a chance to really start to meet some of the other competitors and hear their stories. It was cool, inspiring and I really loved it. It was an awesome experience. Jon Lindsay puts on great shows.
How did you feel after pre-judging?
I felt confident, but humble. You never know what the judges are thinking. I was really too amped to eat much. In The Titans show I think I ate a little too much after prejudging and I felt kind of bloated. I wanted to feel thin for finals so stuck with my tilapia, apple sauce and yams.
How did you feel about the final results of the show?
Excited. It was my second win in 7 days, so I was feeling pretty good. And then it made me want to do it again.
What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
Competing in the Men’s Physique Division has had an immediate impact with client growth in personal training. I’ve already picked up two new clients that want to compete. It’s also pushed me to improve myself and begin working with a trainer who specializes in sculpting and nutrition, so I’m learning a lot. I have an acting background, so I’m interested to see where I can take this journey in Men’s Physique and maybe combine the two, while incorporating my personal training experience. I’m really excited about going to Pittsburgh in July for the NPC Master Nationals and just going for it. To think that I’m training potentially to attempt to get my IFBB pro card is just crazy. There’s a lot of opportunity, it should be fun ride. I’m amped. I also think Men’s Physique in time will be a driving force in bodybuilding. I just feel people can relate a little more to that type of physique. It’s more of a fitness look.
Age:
48
Hometown:
I’m an Army brat, so I never really had a hometown. When people ask where are you from, I just say Jersey. Now I live just outside of L.A.
Current city:
Palmdale, Ca.
Years training:
Too many to count, on and off since high school.
Education:
University of Life.
Occupation:
Personal Trainer
Favorite type of training:
Just hit it hard, higher reps usually hitting about 15 reps, and just challenging myself constantly. I’m constantly changing my workouts. Usually I will, based on how my body is responding, change up my routine. Go heavier, less reps, or more reps or just go in reverse. I do love the high rep thing though, gets me pumped.
Favorite body part to train:
Shoulders. I love shoulders.
Favorite exercise:
Dumbbell shoulder press.
Rep range:
I like to exercise the muscle so normally it’s 15. Right now I’m trying to put a little more size on, so it’s 8 -12 reps.
Number of sets:
Minimum of 3, but I let my body tell me when to move on.
Typical workout duration:
Two to three hours.
Training split:
Monday – Chest /Tuesday – Back / Wednesday – Legs/ Thursday – Shoulders / Friday – Arms / Saturday – Legs up and either pick ups or work on weaknesses. I hit cardio every day. Abs I usually split with a heavy crunch day and a high rep twist day.
Typical daily eating plan:
I keep it clean. Usually I’m trying to hit 30 grams of protein, 30 grams of carbs and 10 grams of fats six times a day. I rotate fish, chicken and lean ground turkey, and every third day lean ground beef as my proteins. Carbs usually are yams, asparagus, fruit, brown rice and multi grain cereal and oatmeal. Fats I get from fish, raw almonds and almond butter or peanut butter.
Favorite supplement:
ON 100% whey protein and my pre workouts Jack 3d and C4 (alternating)
What peaked your interest in training?
Was an athlete in high school, so it was natural for me to end up in the gym. My body responded well right off the bat, so I was easily hooked.
Who influences/influenced your training?
I don’t think anyone influenced my training, I never really followed bodybuilding when I was young. I just loved how it made me feel and the results I was getting.

At this point is bodybuilding and snowboarding.

I’m a creative guy, so I like art, music and film. I also am a huge UFC fan. Love that sport.

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?
I want to drive this as far as I can go. I love challenges. I feel I need to show up to every show better and I hate to lose. Also it’s the example I’m showing my kids…that anything is possible.
