Today we are here with MP Competitor Matt DuBois. Congrats on a great showing! What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
I have always wanted to compete in a bodybuilding show. I was so excited when I found out that the NPC Physique was starting in 2011. I have attended many bodybuilding events over the years and I felt that I had a well balanced physique for competitions.
Can you tell us a little about the Competition you just competed in?
I just competed in the 2011 NPC Sacramento Open Physique and Masters Physique 35+. It was a great competition with several good physique competitors.
How did you feel after pre-judging?
I felt really good after pre-judging based on being in the first round callouts in both of my divisions. I have improved on my posing and I felt this really contributed to my higher placing in both physique classes.
How did you feel about the final results of the show?
I was very happy with the final results of the show. I took 3rd in Masters Physique 35+ and 5th place in Open Physique B. I have continued to make improvements on my physique and I feel that my placing was reflection of all the hard work and dieting.
What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
I plan to continue to make improvements to my physique and eventually get my IFBB Pro card. I have done modeling in the past and I plan to pursue further modeling and acting opportunities in the future.
Age:45
Hometown:
Born and raised in Trenton, NJ
Current city: Antioch, CA
Years training: 21
Education: Accounting\Computer Science
Occupation: Chief Financial Officer / Chief Technical Officer
Favorite type of training: HIIT training is my favorite. I also incorporate Tabata training in various workouts. I vary my training with drop sets, supersets, forced reps and failure on all sets.
Favorite body part to train: I love to train my back. When I hit it good, it can really knock the wind out of me. I like to do drop sets on back to failure on each set with no rest between sets. I usually at least 5-7 sets in each drop set.
Favorite exercise: My favorite exercise is hiking/sprinting with my dogs. I love the outdoors and try to do as much as possible outside.
Rep range: I always keep the reps high. Normal range is 12-18. When I want a crazy pump, I will go all the way up to 30 reps.
Number of sets: I never do just 4 sets per exercise. I usually do at least 6-8 sets per exercise sometimes more if I need it.
Typical workout duration: I take pride in being done in less than 1 hour for all workouts. I push myself on each set and I keep rest to 10-20 seconds average between sets. I keep my heart rate the entire hour to maximize fat burning and cardio results.
Training split: I usually do push days and pull days. I have no set body part for each day. I always analyze my physique for weaknesses and focus on improving those areas the most.
Typical daily eating plan: I eat 6-8 meals per day. I eat mostly chicken and fish for my protein. I eat a lot of spinach
Favorite supplement: I really like Arginine and Glutamine. I feel that I get a great pump with limited fatigue and soreness using these supplements
What peaked your interest in training? I grew up with pictures of Arnold and Bruce Lee on my wall. I always admired Bruce Lee for his superior conditioning and strength.
Who influences/influenced your training? I have read books on Bruce Lee and his relentless determination. This is what gave me the motivation and determination to improve my physique each day, for the rest of my life.

I have also made some really good friends there who give me great advice and encouragement. My friends have continued to push me to reaching my goals and it has really helped me during those difficult times dieting and training.
Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
I was born with Asthma and I was told by Doctors that I would not be able to do activities like other children. I spent a lot of time in the hospital on medication during my childhood while other kids were out playing and having fun. I then met Derrick Whitsett while in High School and my life was changed forever. He was a teen Bodybuilder with a love for bodybuilding a great friend. He motivated me to set goals and to work towards those goals. I have never looked back from that point on. He trained me and taught me how to overcome my weaknesses through dedication and persistence. Derrick then turned pro at 27yrs of age and proved what hard work and dedication can accomplish. I still have Asthma, but I have learned that I will not let it stop me from accomplishing my goals.
