Ian Lauer: Hello and thanks for joining us Sandy. How are you today?
Sandy Williamson: Great, taking care of business. So you have some questions for me?
IL: You know it! First off, how long have you been judging IFBB and NPC shows?
SW: Let’s see…26 years and have seen quite a few competitors over the years.
IL: Yes that is quite a bit of time to see a large variety of competitors in numerous divisions. Questions about different divisions come up all the time. What comparisons do you see between the Bikini Ladies and the Men’s Physique divisions?
SW: What are we looking for? That depends on the athletes that show up to each event. This is the hardest point to get the people to understand. At local and regional shows there are typically smaller turnouts. The smaller turnout means you will see more of this. For example, if my choice is between a guy without abs and a guy that is slightly overly muscular with good abs chances are it would go to the more muscular guy. At a larger show you will see more of what the judges are ultimately looking for in the winner.
IL: What are YOU looking for in the Men?
SW: I wasn’t at Jon Lindsay’s Muscle Contest; but, just from viewing pictures online examples would be the winners from Muscle contest in the medium and tall class…not huge traps, delts and lats. Don’t forget this is also about how you move and how you look on stage. Stage Presence will play a big role in physique more so than in bodybuilding.
IL: What kind of shorts would you recommend?
SW: We aren’t really looking at the legs. When it comes to the waist being 1” below the belly button, we want board shorts that are well above the…well you get the idea. Like with the bikini girls we are avoiding overdoing it early because that’s easier than trying to reign it back in later.
IL: What level of oil and tan would you prefer to see on the competitors?
SW: I like to see a little protan or a similar product. Be sure to choose a product that gives you the bronze tan not the yellow or greenish look depending on your body chemistry. Abs are lost from a distance under the lights if you aren’t dark enough…remember this is a different ballgame than a photo shoot. STAY AWAY from the MAKE-UP tan products…they can hinder the visibility of hard earned definition.
IL: What would you consider “extreme muscularity” and what level of conditioning do
you feel is indicative of the Men’s Physique division?
SW: I don’t want to see grainy look. I would like to see a healthy, nice skin tone. No stringy look or extreme muscular separation. Monster traps, huge chest, extreme lats, and shoulders can be marked down.
IL: Any final thoughts?
SW: I was a bit surprised at the big turnout at The Muscle Contest. It looks like there is great interest in this new division. Society is interested in this new attainable athletic look.
IL: Thanks so much for your time!
SW: Thank You.
