This morning I received a distressing text message from my good friend Oscar Arden. Oscar is a Guru who's best known for training Kai Greene to 2 consecutive Arnold Classic championships. He's also currently working with Victor Martinez for his return to action at the 2011 Arnold Classic. Here's a portion of the text, in his own words, describing what happened:
"I fell Wednesday night on the ice after coming home from training Victor. I fell in front of my house and tore my right quad off the bone."
Oscar explained that the pain was so severe that it brought tears to his eyes. He said he had never experienced anything like it. Because of the complete quad rupture, he couldn't walk or even stand and, instead, crawled from the sidewalk up to his front door. After banging on the door, Oscar's wife, Iris, helped him inside. By that time, he was visibly shaking from the cold and the pain in his damaged quad was getting worse.
"I took some pain meds, iced the leg, and went to the hospital. They put a cast on and will do surgery in the next few days," says Arden.
The doctors attempted an MRI on his leg immediately following the accident, but it was too swollen. According to Arden, he's been on crutches since then, and is waiting to find out what the doctors want to do next. The tentative plan is to have surgery in the next few days to reattach the muscle to the bone.
When I asked Oscar if he'll continue prepping Victor Martinez for the Arnold, his response was quick and certain: "Even on crutches, I will prep Victor so he can be poised and ready for the win in Columbus. Nothing will stop us! This victory means everything to us."
When I mentioned to Oscar that my friend and top national bodybuilder, Juan Morell, told me that Victor has never looked better and he is sure that people would be shocked come March 5th, Oscar said, "Victor definitely looks his best ever! He will be dry and hard this time. This will be the Victor that everyone has been waiting for!"
I wish Oscar a speedy and painless recovery. He's one of the "good" people in bodybuilding and I'm looking forward to seeing both Victor and he in Columbus for the Arnold Classic.
