"Now that's what I call posing."
- Arnold Schwarzenegger
When we think of iconic bodybuilders we seldom think of Ed Corney. I don't know why that is. While he was a shining star during the golden age of bodybuilding, (and even according to Arnold, one of the best posers of all time), his name is not spoken with the same reverence as Arnold, Franco and Louie. This is odd considering his 30 year competitive career that includes an impressive list of wins at the 1970 IronMan, the 1971 AAU Mr. California, the 1971 IFBB Mr. USA, the 1972 IFBB Mr. America and the 1972 IFBB Mr. Universe, the 1994 IFBB Masters Olympia 60+, as well as induction into the IFBB Hall of Fame. It's also his image, not Arnold, Franco or Louie, that graces the covers of both Pumping Iron the movie and book versions. And it was he, not Franco, who appeared in Pumping Iron as Arnold's training partner.
The greatest test of Ed's indomitable spirit came in 1999 when Ed suffered a heart attack while undergoing shoulder replacement surgery. If that wasn't bad enough, a blood thinning medication that was given to him to treat the heart attack caused him to suffer two strokes. After a short period in a coma and some time confined to a wheelchair, Corney fought his way back to health. The wheelchair is now gone, donated to a worthy local charity, and Corney is back at the gym seven days a week. He is a fixture at various annual bodybuilding events like the Mr. Olympia Expo and the Arnold Classic Expo (where this year he signed a photo purchased by the Smalley Brothers), and he continues to counsel young athletes through personal training sessions and public lectures. Ed is one of the most endearing and enduring members of our community and we want to recognize his incredible career here on RX Muscle.
