Six Meals Per Day Reduces Abdominal Fat
A study conducted by Skidmore College in New York has determined that high protein diets along with increased meal frequency reduce abdominal fat. Researchers set out to test the effects of whether traditional diets of 15% protein were as effective at burning fat as a high protein diets that contained 35% protein. Researchers also tested to see if distributing protein intake over six meals per-day was more effective than the traditional three-squares. Participants were split into three groups; group one consumed a diet consisting of 35% protein distributed over three meals per day, group two received 35% protein spread over six meals per day, and group three ate the traditional 15% protein over three meals per day. Following a 56 day study researchers found that the group that consumed high protein spread over six meals had decreased bodyfat, decreased abdominal fat, higher lean bodymass, and greater postprandial thermogenesis than the other two groups.

Testosterone May Fight Female Dementia
A study recently presented at the ENDO13 conference has shown that testosterone may have the ability to improve verbal learning and memory in post-menopausal women. The study was conducted on 96 post-menopausal women that were randomly selected. The women were split into two groups; group one received supplemental testosterone gel, while the other received an identical placebo. The study lasted six weeks and each participant underwent a series of tests at the start, and again at the conclusion of the study, to measure cognitive function. After analyzing the data at the conclusion of the study it was determined that the group that received the testosterone therapy showed a “significant clinical improvement” on the tests, leading researchers to believe that testosterone may improve cognitive function in women.

Chronic Cannabis Use May Cause Brain Inflammation
You might want to start reconsidering your daily wake-n-bake. New research has found that chronic cannabis use causes brain inflammation. A recent study was conducted on mice that received doses of THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) for six days. Following administration of the drug the mice were required to perform several tasks to test their coordination and their ability to associate a sound with a puff of air to the eye. Mice given THC showed difficulty in performing both tasks, and, upon further investigation, researchers also found that THC activated microglial cells – which are immune cells in the cerebellum. It was determined that inflammation in the cerebellum was the cause of the learning and coordination issues. Researchers found that upon cessation of use the symptoms went away, however, they noted that long term chronic use may lead to “cerebellar deficits.”

Researchers Identify Molecule That Reduces Fats in Blood
Scientists may have found a way to combat the deadly condition known as Hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is a condition that results in high levels of fats in the blood due to an over-production of the body’s own lipoproteins. A recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine has identified a gene known as miR-30c that has the ability to reduce Hyperlipidemia in humans. The gene works by regulating what are known as a mircosomal triglyceride transfer proteins (MTP). MTP’s act as regulators for the production of lipoprotein’s within the body, and by activating miR-30c the body is able to maintain healthy normal production. Scientists are hopeful medications mimicking miR-30 will help combat coronary artery disease in the near future.

Exercise Turns White Fat into Brown Fat
New information being reported by The American Diabetes Association has found that exercise has the ability to turn white adipose tissue into brown adipose tissue. In our bodies we have two types of fat; white adipose tissue that acts as an energy reserve and stores excess calories, and brown adipose tissue (BAT) that is metabolically active and is used by the body to generate body heat by burning calories. The twelve week study had participants engage in an exercise program that required them to train using an exercise bike. Researchers found that the participants who took part in the exercise program experienced a “browning of their subcutaneous white adipose tissue”. According to researchers the results of the study suggest that exercise will train fat to become more metabolically active and improve health, metabolism, and body composition.
