When applying blush, fan brushes are exceptional for depositing color without making you look clownish, so I HIGHLY recommend them. You can always layer more color on, so just take your time with this step. My go-to blush shades for stage are MAC Dollymix (a strawberry pink with great color payoff) and MAC Raizin (a deep chocolate-berry). I usually lean towards Dollymix with a touch of NARS Taos (this is a beautiful peachy shade with subtle shimmer) at competitions.
Begin by applying blush at the apples of your cheeks, smiling so that you can see where the apples (the round, fleshy part under your eyes and above the cheekbone) are on your face, then extend out slightly to your temples. You can also apply a touch of blush on your temples for a rosy glow. Lastly, I will blend the blush with my blender brush so that it extends a bit onto the area just under the cheekbones. Depending on your face shape, this can soften and warm up your look.
