By this date last year the Desert Muscle Classic, St. Louis Pro and the California Governor's Cup had contributed to the inaugural year of the Pro Physique division. And it was just one day short of a year ago that promoter Jon Lindsay staged the first L.A. Grand Prix Pro Physique event at the Veteran's Auditorium in Culver City.

With severe weather threatening the state of Ohio along with what was being called a budget-cutting financial 'sequester' looming over the rest of the nation as March approached, none of that dampened the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Arnold Classic Sports Festival, held, as it has always been, in the Buckeye State's capitol city of Columbus.

As the fledgling 80's gave way to the 90's, women's bodybuilding continued to grow, and with the 90's, numbers continued to soar – in more ways than one.  A fitness class within the NPC was born and by 1995 the fitness division was also introduced at the Ms. Olympia.  A new breed of competitor came with this class as lean, strong, athletes – many of whom were former gymnasts - stormed the stages at amateur events.....anxious to reach the pro level.

As it pertains to women's bodybuilding, the past three decades have flown by at breakneck speed and with those decades - and almost as quickly - has come the winds of change.  For the sake of this article we'll use 1982, '92, '02, and 2012 as benchmarks of each ten years to the present, and because the most prestigious amateur contest in each of those years was the AFWB American Women's Championships which would become the NPC Nationals in 1984, the primary focus of this story will be built around the combination of those two events.

The first competitive season of women's Physique contests at the IFBB pro level is now in the record books, and the new division, with little argument, is off to a good start. With a group of contestants that was generated largely from the national-level amateur events staged by the NPC in the United States last year, as well as an additional contingent of entrants that was international in scope, the curiosity of just how the contestants would look – as well as how they would be judged – piqued everyone's interest.
