This weekend was another huge show for MP Competitors and the division as a whole. The day of the show the decision makers in the NPC made a wise move and bumped up the number of classes from 2 to 3 as well as the number of PRO CARDS awarded at the North American's. There were a total of six Pro Cards awarded this past weekend.
Interest in this new division has caught on like wildfire. J.M. Manion, of the NPC, predicted that the Men's Physique Division would be huge and he was right on the money! In very short order it has taking the fitness shows by storm and is starting to dig in as a staple at many NPC and soon IFBB shows. MP is a great division breathing a new kind of life into a sport we all love. Now is the time for the Pro's to step up and make ALL MP competitors proud to be part of this movement.
Here are your Six Newest MP PRO's...
We are less than a week out from the North American’s and here are the standings following the USA’s. It was the largest show not only in the history of the division but in the NPC as well. If this show told us anything it’s that anyone can win on any day. Due to the enormous size of the C Class this show you will notice some new names appear in the top 20.
Rankings following the Team U competition held in Teaneck, NJ. It was a small show but clearly not lacking talent since 4 of the top 20 ranked competitors earned their pro cards this weekend.
Here are the standings following the Jr Nationals in Chicago, IL. This I would have to say was probably the deepest show in every category that I’ve been to this season. Usually there are a good number of competitors who look like their trainers did them a disservice but not this time. Here are the standings following this show. Let the debates begin. LOL
1. Bobby Ashhurst 33
2. Kevin Perod 32
3. Jesse Lehman 30...
In preparing for the USAs I noticed all the major sites had all these articles, videos, ones to watch, etc for every category but ours. Also, the college and NFL football seasons are about to begin and we all know the emphasis and excitement the BCS rankings as well as the fantasy football player rankings bring to the sport. So I figured why not do it for our sport.
This is a subjective sport to begin with so I wanted to take opinion out of the rankings and have it completely based on a mathematical equation based on our performance on the national level. Here is the equation I came up with
(show score + top 5 bonus) + [show score + (top 5 bonus x # of top 5 finishes)] / # of shows = avg score/show
Avg score/show + # of shows squared = Total score
To start I wanted how we placed as well as the size of our classes to be taken into account. If you have 20 competitors in your class and finish 1st then your score will be 20, 2nd place is 19, 3rd place 18, and so on. Since they do not place competitors who finish 16 and lower those competitors will receive 1 point. Since it is more difficult to win against a large class than a small one this will reward competing against a larger field.
Then I wanted to reward a top 5 finish. Finishing in the top 5 will receive an additional 5 points for the first time you finish in 5th place or better. If you place in the top 5 in a 2nd show then you will receive 10 points. This will be your 5 point bonus multiplied by the number of times you finished top 5.
You total the scores for all the shows you competed in and divide that number by the number of shows you competed in to come up with your average show score. I finally wanted to reward guys who competed in multiple shows because it is very hard on our bodies to do more shows. This final part grows exponentially the more shows you compete in. So if you competed in 2 shows then you multiply 2 x 2 to equal 4 points added to your average score per show which will equal you total score. The higher your total score the better your ranking will be.
Hopefully that makes sense and if it didn’t then too bad. Just kidding. I will post a ranking the next 3 weeks as well so we have the most recent ranking a week prior to the North Americans. Here is the first Top 20 ranking following the Jr USAs.

On the 26th of March we witnessed the first Men’s Physique division to be held in Culver City, California. I competed in the show and was surprised to see so many men keen to compete in this all-new division of the NPC. Going in to the show one of the things that seemed to be on everyone’s mind was that since Men’s Physique is so new and the criteria were so vague, we really didn’t know what to expect. I think even the judges were the same, admitting that they hadn’t quite figured out yet what they were looking for. This would be the first chance for Californians to set the standard for what would evolve into Men’s Physique in the future. Since I was up close and in the mix I will give you my perspective of how things went down on the day.
Each year there seems to be a new class, division or major change in the sport of bodybuilding and 2011 will be no different. With the introduction of the Bikini division competitors wondered when a "men's bikini division" would arise and although that didn't happen there was the birth of something else. The Men's Physique Division. If you can't get your mind around that then think of chiseled abs and the muscularity of a Men's Health cover model with an appealing combination of aesthetics and symmetry.
