The AAU Mr. America contest began in 1938 and was firmly established as the biggest contest in amateur bodybuilding in the United States by the 1960’s and 70’s. Whoever won the AAU Mr. America was the best bodybuilder in the country in the amateur ranks, hands down.
1984 Mr. Olympia – a New King Arrives, Part 2
As the competitors for the Mr. Olympia contest lined up onstage at the Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden on November 3rd, 1984, the voracious New York City crowd roared its approval for one of the greatest collection of bodybuilders to ever compete for this coveted title. Champion bodybuilders from the past, present and even the future stood before the knowledgeable and passionate fans who knew top notch quality when they saw it.
2013 Pro Shows Review
It’s a wrap! As 2013 comes to a close, let’s take a look at the crowded calendar of the 14 IFBB Pro Contests that we had to pleasure to witness over the last 12 months. This year surprisingly started as it began (“The Blade”) and it included three Arnold Classic competitions as well as one of the most anticipated Mr. Olympia contests in years.
The First NPC Nationals
Thirty-one years ago, a new bodybuilding organization called the National Physique Committee (NPC) began promoting bodybuilding competitions in the United States. The NPC was created to work with the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) to provide an amateur organization of the United States to work in conjunction with the biggest bodybuilding organization in the world.
1984 Mr. Olympia – A New King Arrives, Part 1
If there was ever a contest that included a combination of the old guard and the new blood, it was the 1984 Mr. Olympia. This historic event included three Mr. Olympia winners in the competitors list as well as a line-up that looked like a Who’s Who of some of the greatest bodybuilders from the 1970s and 80s.
“Pumping Iron” vs “Generation Iron”
When it was announced last year that a new “Pumping Iron” was being made, I rolled my eyes after hearing the news. “Pumping Iron” was released way back in 1977 and, since the release of that soon to be classic film, there has always been talk of another “Pumping Iron”. However, it was always just talk and it never came to be.

Now that the biggest and most highly anticipated bodybuilding competition has come and gone, what have we learned? The 2013 Mr. Olympia contest was hyped as one of the biggest and best Mr. Olympia contests in its 49-year history.
2013 Mr. Olympia – John Hansen’s Predictions
In the movie “Casino”, Robert DeNiro portrays a character that was based on the true life story of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, a gambling mastermind who ran Las Vegas for the mob for many years. Rosenthal was a genius at picking the winning team or individual in a sporting event. He would study every aspect of the players involved, the coaches, the weather conditions, the playing field, the trends, etc, etc.
