Straps or No Straps?

strapsquestion I get asked quite often is whether to use lifting straps or not. Depending on your goals the answer will be different. So let's look at two separate goals someone might have in the gym. The first individual's goal is to build as much strength a possible in all aspects of his training. You could even call this individual a power lifter.

The advantage of using straps for this individual is that he will be able to grip the weight better and lift more weight. So that sounds like a good thing, but it isn't. The downside to this is that it takes work away from the forearms and could cause them to be a weak link for the body. So as the back builds strength you might be lacking in the forearms. As a power lifter or someone looking to build strength in all aspects of their body a weak link is not acceptable.

Now the second individual has a goal of building his physique in the gym and is not as worried about strength as much as building size and sculpting the physique. The advantage of using straps is that you can lift more and squeeze the back and won't have to worry about the forearms giving out. Downside of course is the forearms may become the weak link and there isn't as much direct work to them. Since the goal is to build the physique and not as much worried about strength the advantage of the straps outweigh the negative in this scenario. This individual can also work forearms directly to help build their size if they do become a body part that is out of proportion.

As with any decision that is made when deciding what is best for the body look at your goals and weigh the pros and cons. Make sure you’re picking the right decision not the easy decision. For most individuals looking to build and sculpt their physique, the use of straps can greatly benefit those goals. Lift smart and I look forward to hearing your questions.
