Jonathan Antignani Interviews Before Arnold

Jonathan Antignani's time in the NPC has been short, but he's already making a name for himself. He placed 6th in the extremely competitive Men's Physique Division at the 2011 NPC Nationals, and has no set his sites on the Arnold Amateur!

-How did you decide to do Men's Physique? Why MPD?

321149 10150357417435997 502565996 8599377 1870156153 n-1I have made fitness a lifestyle and a passion as opposed to a hobby about 5 years ago when i graduated from the National Personal Training Institute in Hoboken NJ. I had the knowledge and it was time to use it for my own benefit! As i saw significant changes in my physique i started thinking about taking things to the next level and stepping on stage as an NPC bodybuilding competitor. For some reason at the time, i did not have the discipline and drive and kept putting it off and putting it off. Finally in 2011 the NPC had developed the Mens Physique and a good friend of mine and my trainer, IFBB Pro Mark Antonek approached me at LA Fitness, talking about how great id be for the new division and that he would like me to persue it in the St. Pete Muscle Classic, a show he was hosting in August of 2011. The aesthetically pleasing physique was very appealing to me and it took me no time at all to make the jump and start training! I stepped on stage Aug 27th 2011 and took first place in my very first show ever and from there it stuck!

-What's your contest history?

2011 St. Pete Muscle Classic-St. Petersburg FL-Aug 27th : 1st Place
2011 NPC National Championships- Miami FL- Nov 17-18 : 6th Place
2012 Arnold Amateur- Columbus Ohio- March 2nd : TBA

-Is your family supportive?

Oh of course! My family is more supportive than i could ever hope for! For Nationals my mom has been at all of my competitions to this date and actually  had to tan me for a couple of coats before i could get down to Miami for the 2011 NPC National Championships! My father also flew down from NJ to attend the show and has been nothing but proud of me the eintire journey, Dad will actually be flying into Ohio to show his support at the 2012 Arnold Amateur!

The Arnold was actually kind of a last minute decision for me! I was originally just shooting for a show in May, got wind of the Arnold a few days before the registration deadline, and mailed in my registration about a half hour later and got to work with my prep!

-What would you like to see the judges look for in MPD?

Aesthetically pleasing physiques, muscle balance and symmetry. There has to be mass involved but a proportional amount, nothing overwhelming. And, stage presence! Stage presence is a big one! you have to be able to display what you have worked soo hard to achieve!

-Out of the pros who do you think will be the first mr. Olympia and why?

Personally, out of the current MP pro's, I'd like to see Ryan Hughes, or Matt Christianer take the title of MP Olympia! such great aesthetic builds with quality size and symmetry! personally what i strive to achieve!

-Are you in favor of boardshorts or do you hope they change the trunks to something shorter?

I really am a fan of the look of the boardshorts, however i am open to change and other ideas and in fact thing that a shorter short revealing some thigh might be a decent idea to further show conditioning and proportion!

-How are you currently training?

Currently i am training twice a day, higher intensity workouts, as heavy as possible and really focusing on a solid, deep, muscle contraction! Focus is key! Also have been hitting the stair master at least once a day to keep that calorie burn up there and keep that bodyfat reduced to keep me lean and shredded!

-What did your offseason look like?

To be honest, with the Arnold Amateur being such a last minute decision for me, and bouncing from show to show since i started with only a few months in between, i don't really feel as if i really had an off season! The work load has consistently been up there, my intensity and drive has never lessened and my diet for the most part has continuously stayed pretty clean!

-What are your future plans?

See how i do at the 2012 Arnold Amateur, and do what ever it takes from there to go pro! I'd really like a shot at the MP Mr. Olympia and am hungry enough and driven enough to the point where i'm gonna try my best to make it happen!
