Meet MP Competitor Chad Abner

Joiningphoto us today is MP Competitor Chad Abner.  Congrats on a great showing!  What made you decide to compete in the Men’s Physique Division?
Thanks so much.  I have always followed bodybuilding and been involved, but when the Men’s Physique Division came about, I knew it was going to be my chance to participate.  I couldn’t be more excited about the addition of this division.  It’s an amazing opportunity for guys like me who have to stay really active and carrying around a lot of mass is not an option.

Can you tell us a little about the Competition in which you just competed?
The NPC KyMuscle Strength and Fitness Extravaganza is an amazing show.  It’s put together by promoter Brent Jones in Louisville, KY.  It has everything from IFBB pro figure to arm wrestling.  The men’s physique was deep.  There were 16 shredded guys in the tall class that I was in and 8 in the short class.

How did you feel after pre-judging?
I felt like I had a great opportunity to place well.  I was in center stage with the first call out.  So I knew if I brought it to the night show I could end up on top.

How did you feel about the final results of the show?
I couldn’t be more excited.  To end up winning my class and taking the overall as well made all of the intense training and strict dieting seem like nothing.  All of my clients even forgave me for being so hard to deal with the last few weeks.

What are your thoughts on the Men's Physique Division and what it may be able to do for your career?
The Men’s Physique Division is exactly what the NPC and IFBB needed to bring back more aesthetically pleasing athletes and to get some positive attention.  For my career it brings about opportunities I would have never been blessed with.  I think there is definitely a place for me in the sport and the sky is the limit as far as opportunities to support my family and being able to help out other athletes grow and reach their goals as well.  That’s the amazing thing about this division, there is such a good atmosphere with most of the top guys in the sport. Everyone is more than supportive.

What peaked your interest in training?
It started due to sports, but I was bitten by the bug and sports long since fell by the way.

Who influences/influenced your training?
I love how Jay Cutler has represented bodybuilding so that is a huge influence.  Alex Carneiro as well as several of the other top guys in men’s physique definitely have had an impact on the training I am doing to compete.  Charles Glass has always influenced some of the nuances of my training as well.  He always tweaks techniques to get the most out of them.  I’ve learned to do that a lot in the last couple of years training myself as well as clients.

Sports: I played baseball; but, football is my love

Special interests:
My family has been hit hard by cancer so cancer research is dear to my heart. Anything that involves getting children more active gets my immediate attention and involvement.  With television, video games, and the lack of physical education these days, we have to become more proactive.

Physique, fitness, bodybuilding competition history:
2011 NPC KyMuscle - Overall and 1st place in tall class
2011 Tricky Jackson Classic – 3rd

Next planned competition: 2012 Jr. Nationals

What keeps you on track towards reaching your goals?
I love training hard and it’s my dream to be an IFBB pro.  Seeing the progress my clients make as well as how hard they work makes me work that much harder.

Interesting fact or something you would like our readers to know about you:
I am the very proud father of my 3 year old daughter Mattie.  She makes everyday a blessing and being a dad is the most important job in the world.  She inspires more from me than I could ever be on my own.
