High Carb Backlash: Insulin Packs a Punch!

As much as I tried, my eyes could barely open up all the way Monday morning, the edema in my face was pushing them shut.  My entire body felt bolted to the mattress and as battered as if a truck had run me over e few hundred times in both forward and reverse.  My head hurt, my joints hurt, and all my movements felt absurdly laborious and slow.  I had just slept for 12 solid hours  yet I felt as weak and as exhausted as I if I had just done the Eco Challenge.

Close Calls, Bad Behavior and Near Rupture Experiences

There are two trains of thought concerning close calls and lifting mishaps: The first states that lifting weights, or those who lift them, could do you serious harm every time you hit the gym. Eventually the odds will catch up with you. A distracted training partner, a dropped plate, a loose pin all sound innocent enough, but in the wrong place or at the wrong time, any of them could land you in the ER, or worse. The second train of thought insists the greater your level of experience, the sooner you'll recognize potential trouble and nip it in the bud. The unsettling part is that neither is absolutely true or false.

Stuff I Hate: Machine Monopoly!

It's nice to have choices. So, like many muscle heads, I have more than one gym membership. Today, I wasn't too pressed for time so I went to the big gym (LA Fitness) because I wanted to train, do cardio and stop for a tan on my way home. And, owning up to the fact that it was beautiful day outside, my car had just been detailed, and it was full of gas; I decided to take the long way and drive along the beach to take in some of what south Florida is famous for.

Cops on Juice: Anything For the Cause!

The story that Dave posted about the 15 Broward county Sheriffs caught on juice and confined to desk jobs pending investigation really hit home.  I just happen to live in Broward County and I can vouch for the fact that while a city such as Fort Lauderdale has a clean "beachy" post card image; it also has areas that are as nasty and violent as any big city in the U.S.  I've always believed that cops - and soldiers for that matter - should be allowed to take "gear".  In fact, it should be a requirement.  If the bad guys on the street can do whatever they want, why can't the guys sworn to protect us also do whatever it takes?

Ronnie Coleman: A Bodybuilder's Bodybuilder!

ronnieHaving eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman on Heavy Muscle Radio tonight was indeed an honor.  However, the impact it had on me didn't occur until after I listened to the show.  It made me feel good to listen to the Big Nasty feel at home with Dave and me, just shooting the shit about bodybuilding. I couldn't really tell during the taping, but afterward it was readily apparent that Ronnie was unimpressed with how many people might be listening; he was just happy to be here.  And even though I was listening to us, I was still drawn in.  I think Dave and I will always attract a star-studded line up for HMR, but it was this show with Ronnie that I'll cherish in my mind for a long, long, time.

Muscle Girl Follow-Up

Last night, in discussing our new women's radio show, Muscle Girls Inc.- hosted by Colette Nelson and Krissy Chin- I commented that I felt the female contingent of our community was not being served.  Almost immediately, I was taken to task by a website that is purportedly serving the women competitors. I guess I better discuss this further and expound upon what I mean by "served" since the owner of this website couldn't answer a single question about women's bodybuilding correctly when Dave and I had him as contestant on No Bull Jeopardy (on our old MD radio show) opposite Krissy Chin.

Nubain: Bodybuilding's Most Denied Addiction

I wrote this article about 13 years ago.  It was shortly after my second attempt to kick the Nubain habit.  It took one more fall off the wagon for me to finally stop it once and for all; and I haven't touched it since.  Last night, on the "Off Topic" radio show, I was asked about my prior Nubain habit and it brought back some horrible memories.  Since then, I started a thread on the MUSCLE CENTRAL forum that reached out to fellow addicts.  It was so positively received that I thought you might find this oldie but goodie interesting.....
